Falling Snow

One of the most popular effects highlighted on the site is the Falling Snow effect. The first version of it was created in February 2003 for Flash MX. Every few years since then, the effect and its corresponding tutorial were re-written to target whatever language I was fiddling with at the time. There were several AS2 and AS3 versions. There was a WPF and Silverlight version. There was also a Scheme version that I got too frustrated with and never finished. Today, you have an HTML5 / JavaScript vesion.

This was one of the first effects I created many years ago, and it characterizes what got me into computers - making things move elegantly and sharing how that was done. As the years have gone on, each variation of this effect captures a moment in my life vividly. I remember details about where I was geographically when each version was written, who I was in the company of, what computer I was using, and other little things that make me both happy and sad.
