Everybody! This is important. In a few days, these forums will be moving over to using the totally sweet Discourse platform. To ensure this migration happens smoothly with no loss of content, these forums are currently in a read-only mode. I do apologize for the inconvenience.

There is never a good time to turn the forums off for an extended period of time, but I promise the new forums will be a billion times better. I'm pretty sure of it.

See you all on the other side in a few days, and if you have any (non-technical) questions, please e-mail me at kirupa@kirupa.com. For technical questions, try to find a tutorial that corresponds to what you are looking for and post in the comments section of that page.

    change permissions

    i've downloaded a guestbook file:

    but i dont understand this part;
    3) Change the permissions of the 'GuestBook.txt' file to 777.

    what is permissions? if you're using geocities or brinkster, how can you change permissions?. which button should i press?

    use SmartFTP! The best ftp program I've seen so far!

    With WS_ftp you can right click on the file once uploaded and select 'chmod' - Just check all the boxes off.

    But with SmartFTp you can right-click the file, select properties and type in 777 in the permission textbox!

    Yep, it's true ! Got SmartFTP too, simply right click it, select properties and you can enter permissions (with checkboxes or the 777 number, very easy to use). Great program
    Wait, what?
