Everybody! This is important. In a few days, these forums will be moving over to using the totally sweet Discourse platform. To ensure this migration happens smoothly with no loss of content, these forums are currently in a read-only mode. I do apologize for the inconvenience.

There is never a good time to turn the forums off for an extended period of time, but I promise the new forums will be a billion times better. I'm pretty sure of it.

See you all on the other side in a few days, and if you have any (non-technical) questions, please e-mail me at kirupa@kirupa.com. For technical questions, try to find a tutorial that corresponds to what you are looking for and post in the comments section of that page.

Thread: XML into Excel - leading zero

XML into Excel - leading zero

i have an XML file with both strings & numbers such as (part of the XML):

Now, when taking the file and open it with Excel, it reads the CarYear as an Integer and shows just 6 instead of 06...how do I get the year to be shown as a string as well?

Something to do with XML Schema's, but I'm not sure how this is done for just a single tag to display as a string.

    Any guidance?

that would be the simple explanation for it, but this is for a client that does not want to format their excel file...they want to give it to their fleet guys and simply work with it (ur talking people with minimal knowledge of excel that need to work with the numbers and print stuff...thats it)

and the CarYear was a sample I gave you...there is the Unit Number, Ref Num, etc. that have leading zeros. (ps - thanks for the reply though....any other ideas or suggestions?)

why don't you just output the excel file for them? basically make a template that has the formatting done.

there might be something you can do with the xsd, but i'm not sure.
