Is it better to use DVI or VGA to connect? Is there a difference? I'm buying a LCD and I plan using VGA mode, but isn't there DVI to VGA converters?

DVI is newer, and better quality. Use it if you can. DVI=Digital VGA = Analogue

If I get a converter, will the DVI quality retain?

To my knowledge, no. The connection is being lowered to VGA at some point in the road, so it has to stay that way. If your monitor is VGA, it will only display that. If your video outputs VGA, that's the quality with which the signal is sent.

Like it was said before....
DVI is better than VGA, not because its new, but because it has more Quality; more pixels, lines, rows, more bandwith and speed to transmit...

If you use a DVI to vga converter, it will degrade dvi to vga, thus your monitor will not display dvi, because, not only it can't, but because the converter will not allow it...

Quick question - if I hook up an LCD that supports both DV and VGA to my laptop which only supports VGA out, would the picture quality be worse than using a DVI? In other words, what are the main advantages of using DVI to display stuff as opposed to VGA on a good LCD monitor?

DVI is better than VGA, not because its new, but because it has more Quality

Generally a new technology is of higher quality than its predecessor...
