Assuming a Windows OS, you may want to try looking at directory
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSERNAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles
Prior to making a new profile, did you try doing ctrl+alt+del and checking your task manager then under processes if firefox was still running? The message you got usually prompts if such case happens.

Demigod at your service :thumb:
Also, I hate when mozilla does that, it's happened to me a couple times and I was forced to start over with bookmarks. I know there's an extension out there that backs up all your stuff to xml though, might wanna try to find that

I've had this happen to me occasionally at uni when Mozilla doesn't shut down properly too. This is using Mozilla in Linux but what happens is it creates a lock file and all you need to do is delete that and you'll be able to use your profile again.

i had the same problem with the computer at my work place. i went to the task manager and noticed that the program was still running in the background. i solved the problem by just simply shutting down the mozilla/firefox process.

yeah when it does that I usually just close the profile-choose-window, open up task manager and end any firefox processes remaining, and when I run it again it's back to normal.
I'm not sure how to get your bookmarks back though... I always export them to .html every once in a while

I think that happens when you upgrade FF without uninstalling it first. I had the same problem then I uninstalled then reinstalled, vowla.
