hey all,

seeing if there is anybody interested in a battle just using Illustrator. Since being here not too many people have talked about the program. seeing if there is any interest out there

take all comers

try a PS battle instead...i dunno if many people have illustrator

GloryBe
November 22nd, 2002, 02:51 PM
i find that odd, if people have flash with no illustrator. I know i always import my illustrator designs into flash, since it is way easier to draw in illustrator than flash. it just seems the way to go.

-kaotic- cool, getting skills in illustrator is totally underrated, this program is a real life saver for importing into flash and into photoshop if you want a clean crisp look.

let's see if anyone else is interested

perhaps you should just issue a 'vector graphics only' battle where the final is an eps with no bitmaps. not everyone has the same vector graphics application, but i'm sure we all have at least one!

GloryBe: Illustrator is a whole new expensive program that many people can't afford (such as myself, but I want it so so badly).

So is it going to be GloryBe Vs RenGirl?

reverendflash

lost:

you might want to try Fireworks MX first... I haven't even installed Illustrator, because Fireworks does the stuff I need it to do, and it can export directly to .swf with editable text, etc. Plus you can optimize directly from FW for virtually any type of image, or apply all of your PS filters. I seriously find it the best of both worlds...

MM has a trial download you could play with if you want. It comes with some great tutorials built in...

a vector battle would be fine, good plan

lostinbeta
November 22nd, 2002, 04:43 PM
Hey Rev, I have gotten chances to use Illustrator, and I enjoyed it very much, you can also export as a .swf file from it :)

I have never tried Fireworks, I might just download that free trial and give it a run :)

reverendflash
November 22nd, 2002, 04:49 PM
I was trained on AI8, have 9 on disk...

haven't looked at 10...

But yes, AI is a fun prog. I kinda figgered that it could now export to swf. I'm sure just as PS is a more robust prog than FW, AI will prob do a bunch that FW won't.

I just feel for my needs FW is the answer.

My computer has become one large MM icon, I swear...

it ain't that new of a program lost........

illustrator has been around a couple years before photoshop hit the market, just forgotten maybe, i'm not sure.

maybe its time to get it back again, its such a gem

whats fireworks like rev?? i have heard so much about it but haven't seen it in the works yet?

The only MM programs I have are Flash MX and Dreamweaver MX, and the only Adobe program is Photoshop :)

Anywho.. off subject... so is this a vector battle of GloryBe and Ren?

If so a mod gotta set up a theme and rules (me? or Ren...lol).

...Could you define a vector program???

GloryBe
November 22nd, 2002, 05:31 PM
vector is pretty much curves that can be resized without becoming jagged. When u resize images that are pixels (anything in PHotoshop) than they become jagged.

Vector based images can be stretched bigger and look better. except blends and gradients i do believe

illustrator, flash, corel are all vector based programs

mjULTRA
November 22nd, 2002, 05:33 PM
fireworks is a lot like photoshop and image ready rolled into one, with a dash of illustrator thrown in. Its perfect for creating a website interface, slicing it into buttons with mouseovers, and then exporting the image files with an HTML. from there onto dreamweaver, and flash.....

reverendflash
November 22nd, 2002, 05:43 PM
a vector prog is one that uses points, or vectors, and the computer will calculate mathmatically the curve between those two vectors. This allows for scaling both up and down without much loss in quality. Also, since the prog uses vector points, the file size is much smaller than raster based (PS is a raster based image prog) images. Fireworks, like Majeye said is perfect for the web designer. My site was done entirely in Fireworks and Flash (with Generator).

Count me in and definitely invite Kit for this. But I must warn you that I only started working on it recently so I might not be a good challenge, but I want to join just for fun and to get my feet wet in the battle forum.

As far as Adobe/Macromedia - I think it really depends on your preferrence. I have been on both sides of the fence and I find it easier to work with the Adobe interface. Not that it's superior - my brain is just hard-wired to work best with it. Sure, this program might have an extra tool that another program might have, but all in all there's really nothing you can accomplish in that you can't accomplish in another.

Photoshop 7 is actually much more powerful now, with vector, image slicing capabilities. It goes toe-to-toe with Fireworks. :P

lostinbeta
November 25th, 2002, 01:43 AM

Maybe like a comic strip or something... with little vector characters and such ???? No clue...lol.

GloryBe
November 25th, 2002, 06:19 PM
the category can be anything photoshop could be, except without any styles like say grunge or whatever. Anything can be done in illustrator it just has to be drawn rather than paste/copy edit.

the possibilities are endless *staring off into space*

just throw a category out there and see if everyone entered agrees, i think thats the best choice.

if not, hey, trial and error

Idea 1:
Make your own species in Illustrator and then descibe him, or maybe even a little story about your species.

Idea 1:
Make your own car of what you think the average car will look like in the year 2487.

Idea 1:
Make an illustration resembling the difference between heaven and hell.

Which one shall it be?

GloryBe
November 25th, 2002, 06:42 PM
wow Dan, not bad topics............i know i wouldn't come up with anything.

my choice would be the new species, that sounds pretty cool. I'm not much of a futuristic buff, and the only heaven/hell i ever see in my head is the South Park, so i don't want to be sued at all.:)

thats my choice, but thats just one voice

i'm down for a vector battle. i suck at futuristic stuff. but whatever.

I don't mind.

Battles aren't really about winning or anything, just friendly competition. It's not like you get anything for winning, just some congrats and some extra experience under your belt :) So there really isn't a way to be "unfair" unless you cheat in your battle, which is kinda hard to do, and if it is done, a person is disqualified... blah blah blah...LOL.

it was just something i threw together so you'd actually have some "competition."

ya know i really think that they should start doing battles a little different, since none of them seem to be working out. maybe instead of having people join and "commit" themselves to the battle (which doesn't seem to be working), the mods could just come up with a subject, set a due date, and leave it open for all kirupaforum members. that way i'm sure you'd probably get some more people to submit their work, plus you may see a little more diversity, rather than just the "regulars." (who are still awesome, don't get me wrong)

i don't know. just an idea.

matt

lostinbeta

Well see, battles aren't something that Dan made up.

Battles are something that have existed for some time now, and we are just following the typical rules of battle.

If a member doesn't have the time to create something, they shouldn't agree to a battle :-\

deeplybreathe

matt

Makaveli
December 10th, 2002, 12:57 AM
noone is trying *dump* on you deeply but that idea is as fallible as the current system....what if noone submits to the theme at all? at least when people "commit" the mods can give the go ahead and its likely the participants will submit something, otherwise there might be hundreds of battles with no entries...exagerating but you get my drift?

telekinesis
December 10th, 2002, 01:03 AM
Poll has been posted. Don't worry about dropped out of a battle, I don't want to make this a place where people are too scared to enter a battle because they might have something more importnant come up and not have time to submit an entry. But after a few times of dropping out you will be warned and then not be allowed to enter another battle for a certain time period. We are all here to have fun, we have enough police in this world, I'm sure you don't want another one! ;)
