Fill your layer with Black and then use the Lens Flare.
A Lens Flare can only be used on an object, if the layer is empty, you can't use it.

lost you are wrong. all you do is set your forground color to black, then do alt+backspace, then Filter|Render|Lense Flair. note: this must be done in the bg layer.
glad to help, contact if you have troubble,
mike

mdipi, you pretty much just said the same thing I said.
Except the lens flare does not HAVE to be done in the background.
So how am I wrong?

just the fact that you said there had to be something in the layer. i should have been more specific, sorry if you took it the wrong way, my bad.
[edit]for this tut its better if you do have it in the bg.

You do have to have something in the layer.
If you do it on the background layer, it is already filled.
If you are doing it on a new layer (the way I did the tutorial), you need to fill the layer, because you can't put the flare in an empty layer.

mdipi... lost is correct on this one - YOU CANNOT ADD A LENS FLARE TO AN EMPTY LAYER.

If it is any cosolation, I think that tutorial wasn't written as good as it could have been. I wasn't sure whether or not to use the background layer for it, so I created a new layer and did everything in there, returned the same results.

Do you have that layer selected?
I just tried and it works fine for me. It did when I did the tutorial as well.

Did you try using the bg layer calaway.
Mdipi: I did the entire tutorial without using the background layer, you do not HAVE to use the background layer.

Go to the top menu under: Image >>> Mode >>> RGB Color
You are probably running that image as greyscale or indexed color.....does this work for you?

heh.. hey another question.. how do you merge two layers.. i have my first lense on bg layer.. then second on first layer .. according to the tuts.. i have to merge them
telekinesis
November 22nd, 2002, 06:50 PM
Click on one of the two layers you want to link, then look at the other layer that you want to merge the selected one with. There should be a little box on the left and when you click on it a 'linkage' icon should be seen, it kind of looks like a 3 link chain. Then go to the top menu and select: Layer >>> Merge Linked.
That should work in any version of Photoshop that you are using!

Or you could just hit CTRL+E to merge the current layer with the one below it.
I didn't even think of the RGB thing... good thinkin Dan.
And yes, Phil would be proud :beam:

Chaning the position of the flare to be more towards the middle of the document should help.
