As the title says, I just got a new digital camera. I went out on my property looking for things to shoot, and this is the only shot that turned out good enough to post.

Any pointers for a new photographer?

hm.. turning to black and white is nice in this picture... Although it's really dramatic there is no actual theme in it even if i can see 2 - 3 themes in it. Try to "see" stuff when you shoot and be more specific. For example you could take a step back and shoot the whole house and maybe leaving outside the tree. Or you could zoom to this tank thing. try to balance the items in your frame and crop properly. u have a huge volume in the left (the house) and just a tree on the other side which reveals contradiction of volumes but not succesfuly. If that was in ur mind u should take again take a step back and leave some more space next to the tree.

But hey.. this is just my opinion. The pic looks good and u should go out and take billions of photos :)

Happy shooting with ur new toy man :)

How about adding a subject? a person maybe?

There is lots of potential in this area for shooting. As tsiger said it needs a focus, or a theme. Something to draw or direct a viewer's eye. What does the original photo look like? We might be able to draw some other suggestions from that.

the subject IS the house... just look at its shape, the things around it, the feel it has! it's a great picture !!! and the black and white adds to the mood so much. if anything, go into PS and play with the levels and contrast to make the whites whiter and the darks darker.
