This one I can't really pass along unless somone else has read the book.. in which case I wont be able to play. :)
I've opted to make this a different thread because these logic puzzles are not riddles. It's more like 20 questions with a twist. There was a book of puzzles I read once, of which I'm willing to relate a couple, if people are up for the game. The way it works is this. You read the puzzle, and then are allowed to ask any questions which can only be replied to with yes or no answers. Any other questions are invalid.

My favorite of the bunch is this one

A man wakes in the middle of the night. He gets himself a glass of water, and turns out the light. In the morning, he wakes, looks out the window; what he sees is so horrifying that he commits suicide. What did he see.

Ask a question

I'm normally pretty good at these things, but so far this one is eluding me. I'll get back to ya.

look at the instructions guys. You're allowed to ask ANY yes or no questions. These puzzles are NOT riddles in that there is probebly no way that anyone could guess the answer right off the bat. The challenge of course is to get the puzzle in as few questions as possible. In the case of this one, I think the smallest number of questions I've seen completed the puzzle was 15, and that's just because the recipient stumbled across a particularly good question.

So don't hurt yourself.. just try to think of as broad a question as possible to begin with. Each question will lead the next to a smaller and smaller definition of the answer.

In this case, since it's the first one, I'll relate this small clue. What has occured outside his window is his fault AND the answer is obvious when taken in perspective of EVERY line of the puzzle.

that's as much as I can give you, and even that's a little too much. I think I have about 50 of these though, so if people like them I'll post one a day, starting in the evening (5 pm or so) which should provide the questioners the best chance of getting quick replies from me.

Based upon the questions already asked I will say...

The man lived in a lighthouse, it was foggy he turned out the light (the big one on top) and there was a ship that crashed due to the light being out and he saw the people drowing (Or already drowned), and then killed himself.

Was I right?

Cheers!

So based on that people died and he looked out the window and killed himself you got that answer.

I HIGHLY DOUBT THAT... CHEATER!!!!!!!

sintax321
November 15th, 2002, 05:45 PM
Thats waht sucks about doing it this way. Ypu can't tell if someone is cheating. I guess the hounor system is what we have to go with.:)

Niann
November 15th, 2002, 06:34 PM
So, in the future I should answer incorrectly to avoid being labeled a cheater? That hardly seems fair... Sorry thought I was doing the right thing by giving it a go. *shrug*

-Niann

When else would turing a light off kill anybody? None that I can think of. Flipping a switch certainly could, but it was never stated that he flipped a switch, just that he turned the light off. I read everyone's questions carefully and David's answer to them, why would I feel the need to ask them again. There were some excellent questions, all it took from that point was putting the clues together.

1. People died (More than one)
2. The light was on when he work up, he never turned it on so it was on the entire time. (Why would a light be on while you were sleeping if not to illuminate something? Also the only lights left on at night are generally to warn of something, or make apparent a danger of some sort. Besides streetlights and signs and the sort, which is not something I thought of untill now.)
3. Turning the light off casued an event that caused people to die. (It was his fault, his direct action that caused whatever happened to kill all the people.)
4. He did not know any of the victems. (This voids the personal tradigdy theory.)
5. The window looks outside. (So something of a large scale, at least I thought so)

I don't think you cheated either for what it's worth. A person who is in the right frame of mind, having knowledge of those questions asked, should not have a problem getting the answer. Sometimes people just stumble upon the right train of logic.

Take the ribs with a grain of salt niann.. they're just jelous of your brain. :)
