It's almost another tsunami. I fear it's also heading to other areas (Sri Lanka, etc.)

Was just reading about this. No casualties reported as of yet and no sign of another tsunami, though those in low-lying areas have been ordered to evacuate to higher ground.

Everyone is watching this one very very closely. :-/

Funny, the first thing I did after reading an article about it on AP was check his (Ethan's) site. He just left for a "vacation" yesterday so I'm not sure where he is. Hopefully he went to check out some mountains since he's been living near the beach. *crosses fingers*. :*(

. . . and to think it was all caused by those people that signed up for "World Jump Day" and then jumped at the wrong time . . .

something really big is coming.

~300 reported dead in collapsed buildings :( Tsunami warnings cancelled in most countries.

uhm...Not to put you all down or so but... Earthquakes happen with the billions a day. Stronger ones, above 6 on the Richter scale, happen daily.

It's our world, you know. Plate tectonics and such. Don't get me wrong, I feel sorry for all the harm done by nature disasters too, but... Still more men are killed by men, I find that something far worse and apparently that /is/ something you can work on so it goes away.

It's not happening more, it's just that we now have better instruments to measure it and have a news network spread out over the world.

When I was in school for Geology we had a couple of t-shirts we were trying to sell (always trying to raise money for field trips, heh). One was "Stop Plate Tectonics!", which is funny, because you can't. The other was "Plate Tectonics Happens".

And that's the truth of the matter - nothing can (or should) be done to stop the earth's movements. Rather, we need to invest in better natural hazard preparedness - better monitoring systems, more funding for scientific research, better alert systems and networking, more cooperation between countries and governments, better emergency response systems and supplies. And let's not forget that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. If the buildings in Indonesia were built of the same materials and to the same code as the ones along the San Andreas in California then many lives could have been saved. Economic disparity is a huge cause of death all over the world.

My heart goes out to those touched by this tragedy.

Howdy all,

Yes I am doing ok. Sorry to make you worry. I've been travelling for a few days and haven't really had a chance to check emails or post.

I was down south in a place called Krabi. We got woken up at midnight by a few other volunteers to check the TV. The network of us with mobile phones is pretty good here, so within minutes of things we all know what's going on.

Krabi has a big seawall so it wasn't hit that bad the first time... and also since this earthquake was smaller then the last, we just watched the news for a bit then went back to sleep.

I will be moving on to Phi Phi Island next week. (Where The Beach) was filmed which was hit very badly by the tsunami, so that will make future tsunami warnings a bit scarier.

P.S. For those watching my, when I get home counter... I'm now staying another 2-3 months so... you'll just have to keep watching it.
