back in the 40's the world was a lot more insular. (not sure if that's the right word...) it wasn't so easy to travel around the globe. there was no satellite tv, cell phones, faxes, international calling wasn't as easy as it is today, and most of all, no internet. foreigners were much more foreign, so you could get away with stuff like that. now we have to be much more diplomatic in our own internal propaganda.
