**FROM sketch to FINAL product: Work methodology v2**

I though id post here to show how i went about turning a sketch into something worth printing ad hanging on your wall perhaps.

it all starts with a sketch. i made this one in painter in about 15 min. its a fairly decent sketch.

once i have sketch i chose 3 variations of color for each of the parts i'll be coloring. In this instance i chose some nice cool shades of blue for the mechanical parts. i beggin with the lightest tone and move towards darker values. i use a soft brush with low opacity. The blur tool and the smudge tool comes in handy. NOTE: remember that the smudge tool works best when its not at 100% strength. 45% strength is good.

For the sky i chose a green color because a blue color wouldn't work with the blue mecha things. I recommend reading about color theory online its very helpful. For the clouds i chose a soft brush and i just pressed down with my wacom stylus and did it over and over, i used the smudge tool to give it an alien feel to it.
im keeping my colors light since i can always darken later on. makes thnigs easier.

The final image: i used levels adjustment layer to add depth to the colors. the energy ball was tricky to do...i actualy did it in black and inversed then used a color layer for the blue glow. Basicaly nothing in this image is hard. just a lot of small simple steps that make up something complex.

I hate u with a passion vts31. The fact that you are so talanted at drawing and coloring really makes me mad. WHY CAN'T I DRAW. I TRY AND I TRY AND NOTHING WORKS. PLEASE HELP ME.

I practiced drawings things from game magazines and such.

So I went from drawing to what I see, to drawing what is in my head. It was good practice. I consider myself a good drawer, not great, but good.

No where near edwin, the drawing god.

I can't color though... my coloring ability sucks sooooo bad.

So u just tried to copy pictures until u had the techiques down. then startyed to draw your own creations. How long di it take before u had some progress in your skills?

I progressed everytime, I got to the point where I could call myself good in about a year, but that wasn't a year straight of drawing, I would stop for a month or so here and there, just doing doodles and little drawings.

hi guys!

sintax: its funny how i becase good at drawing, it was an accident really. In 9th grade i was your avg joe, i couldnt draw anything but disporportional stick figures, it was really sad. I got put in a french class by mistake and the guy that sat next to me always drew a lot. I saw his art and he was really good!. I saw he would make circles and all these sketches and then go in and add details and things. Him and I became good friends. I started doodling in class a lot.( my grades droped =/). I became pretty obssed, at one point i had like 10 thousand pages of printer paper in my room all filled with skethes. I was inlove with math and physics and i would try to draw like those wormhole diagrams they had in it. I didnt have any magazines so i had to mkae stuff up from my head. After about 5 years of that i strated getting more heavy into art and finiding out about color theory and techniques for art and about composition and things. its very hard and frustrating at first, believe me, this didnt come natural. Its a learned skill. Practice a lot and dont give up. I'll scan in some of my drawings from when i was younger so u can see hopw bad i was.

My family all inherited incredible artisitic ability, My brother and my oldest sister could draw amazingly from the time they could hold a pencil.

I on the other hand am nothing like the rest of my family and I couldn't even make anything look good traced or with a stencil, I was horrible at drawing. In 9th grade is when I started messed with it, and I practiced and practiced and got pretty good.

Then I stopped for a while. And my senior year I took up art in my school and my art teacher loved my art. She gave me pointers and stuff to help me fix things I tend to do wrong, so I practiced with that some more, and I got a bit better.

So just practice practice pratice, its the key here.

Thanks for that link man. I defenatly am gong to start practacing. I should have some natural talent for thins some where in me. My Grandma is some what of a famous artist where i live. She sketches and paints landscapes with great detail. I hope some where I've inherted some of that skill and just haven't taped into it yet.

I have tons of cool images (like that worm u just drew) locked in my head and it is frustrating to not be able to get it out on paper. I guess we will see where i'm at in a year. :P

PS: I also have awful typing skills. Plus I'm a little dyslexic so it adds a little chalange to typing.

heh, gotta hook back up the scanner...mine is so old it was like over $200 back then..now you can get a scanner/printer/photcopier with $200! and the software doesnt even work with WinXP so i gotta install it on one of my ANCIENT computers(like P1 133Mhz). So maybe i will do it so i can edit my pictures in photoshop.

My first computer was 100mhz with about 16MB ram.

I hated it, it literally took 15 minutes to boot up. I had AOL on that POS too, so imagine that (28.8 modem).

It is an indestructable safe too, so you can't get it open in any way!!!!!!!!!

Edwin: You should definately try to sell your stuff! I know this kid in highschool that used to paint watercolors. He would sell them for $1000, and that was his job. He just did what he loved and got paid crazy money for it. You enjoy your art, and you are unbelieveably good, you should be getting money for it. Nobody can deny that you have crazy talent, your work may not be in the genre they are interested in, but I know there are some corps out there that would be interested in your stuff for poster designs, t-shirts...I dunno. You have my respect.

aw thanx u guys. I dont know how to go about selling my stuff, i thought about deviant prints but i dont like it. In my ehole life ive never amde more than a couple bucks off my work. :(. I wish i could make posters and shirts and sell them.

You could do what my friend did, and start your own company. Take out a 'small' loan (1000) and then send a design to a printing company, get about 50-100 shirts and sell them. I know I would buy anything you came out with. Use the profit made from the first round to pay off half the loan, and then use the other half to order more shirts with another design, and repeat the process. If your designs are cool (which I'm sure they would be) you could sell to local shops. My friend started his company last year, so far he's made his money back (he didn't get a loan, he just saved up) and he has made a small profit, but he puts most of the money he makes back into the company to get more stuff. Eventually a profit will come out though. When the season picks up we're hoping to expand becuase of our increased sales.... The hard part is getting the backing money.
