My computer keeps shutting down randomly. It usually happens after about 30 mins or more and the whole comuter shuts down and the hard disc heads are removed (you can tell by the sound).
What is going on?
Is it a virus?
I have scanned my system with antivirus like 4 times, got some virus and they're in a 'Virus Chest', but it still shuts down. What do i do with the things is the 'Chest' and is it something else?

Help me!!!!

Thanks

Wasn't it the Sasser virus that was all over the news that shuts down your computer all the time.

The usual suggestions apply--search Google for any error messages and download the Sasser and/or antivirus program from www.mcafee.com

It could also be due to overheating. Check to see that there isn't a lot of dust accumulating around your CPU's heatsinks and fan area.

Does a popup show saying the RPC terminated?

No popup it just turns off. I looked up viruses and most of them have a warning, like the one mentioned earlier on in this section. This has no warning. It could be due to overheating. Do they turn off suddenly if that happens?

Thanks all for your time

yeah - when your comp overheats it just restarted in my case. You don't get a dialog box or any sort of error.

my bet is overheating. I have that problem with my laptop. I have to crack her open every now and then and blow her out. Being in a fairly dusty environment with a lot of pets (which = hair) is not a good thing for puters ;)

Breifly submerge your computer in water every ten minutes or so... Should prevent overheating :)

...or you could just get better cooling.

invest in a new CPU fan as well as case fans. some of the new cpu fans are quieter. i recommend one with magnetic barings. i know it sounds dangerous for a computer but it does a good job. no motor, and silent. the only sound it really makes is caused by the air it moves.

Its not sasser b/c sasser causes ur PC to go thru shutdown.exe, not just shutoff. If thats the case, then just hit run really fast and type "shutdown.exe -a" and that stops the shutdown sequence.

are you running XP?

If so, XP has a feature where it automatically reboots the computer in the case of a serious error. You can turn it off in Control Panel / System / Advanced Tab / System and Restore Settings/ Automatically Restart

Now when there is a serious system error is will display a BSOD, giving you debugging info so you can see what the error is. I've been having this problem for some time...

Thankyou all who have helped.

It is probably the overheating and I may buy new stuff. Thanks again

lmao, I didn't think of that but

Iv never had any overheating probs, my PC has so many fans in it, makes such a noise. When I have the fan heater on the floor next to meh computer, it sounds like a jet plane taking of, the fans speed up so much.

No probs with my laptop either, Apple's cooling kicks *** :P

Here's what you should do. Go to CONTROL PANEL, then SYSTEM, ADVANCED and then STARTUP AND RECOVERY SETTINGS. Uncheck the box that says Automatically restart. So now if it's not due to overheating you should get a nice bluescreen which may have information about the error. Sometimes it provides a file (like something.sys) which you can track down and it mostly turns out it's a file from some driver.
And also you should test if the RAM is bad, because comps often shutdown due to bad RAM. go to www.memtest86.com

Heating would be my first guess as well. My comp was doing exactly what you describe for several weeks. I cleaned all the dust off of my heat sinks and fans, and voila.. I havent' had it shut down since.

My comp is doing that right now. Its clearly overheating. My temp gauge says its running at 34C... like over 90 Degrees!

Its hot as hell here today too... could be making the situation worse

My 2 year old $600 12000 BTU Air Conditioner decided it didnt want to blow cold air anymore to boot.

I took the side door off and cleaned it out.

So I am stuck with the lappy for a bit

I had this problem. I had to re-format my HD and re-install XP to get it to go away, but it worked ;)
