How interesting is a train station? It's probably just me but I can't get any other image of a 3D model in my mind other than a train...

*punches self*

think of the first matrix scene with neo in the underground train station, columns, seats, phone booth... dirt and aging on the walls, floating pieces of paper and rubbish on the ground, insects... its about making a mood, a scene.. use your imagination.

sounds good to me. There are lots of things that you can do with a subway. Does it have to be realistic? If not then you can make it look like what you think a subway station should look like (futuristic, older, or just different). A lot of different skills are needed, lighting, texturing, space perception, etc. This should be fun!

grinch
February 14th, 2005, 05:44 PM
thanks soulty for the ideas!

Well guys, lets start submitting shall we?

and the battle is currently OPEN

Well I gave this a shot last night, and I have realized that I suck at 3D.

I might try again later, but i'm going to collapse in my own defeat for a while.

I really think if we are going to do a 3D battle we should stick with a single object. I mean a scene is quite a projec to take on, and with a 3 week deadline? No one is going to finish with anything worth a crap.

grinch
February 15th, 2005, 08:32 AM
Yeah well if you don't want to make it look spiffy, then thats your choice!
I'm working on my entry currently, and it's coming along well, just some basic modeling and texturing, and some decent renders.

Doesn't have to look amazing or whatnot!

And deadline can be altered if you wish.

grinch
February 15th, 2005, 08:39 PM
Well if you don't know how to start off, the first thing I do for every project, is create basic geometry, so I can get a basic idea of the scale. Then I start working off of it.
Here's part of my basic geometry.

"Start off simple, understand what your creating, dont rush things" thats what I was told by pro 3d'ers

I see said the blind man. I like it.

I got started on making a subway and gave up, then I thought I would start with something simple so I started modeling a computer case. (clickity click me (http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=85814))

this is why you shouldnt post images before the due time, people dont give up, its an all level 3d battle, dosent matter how good or bad your skills are, this is so you can develop your skills, i m sure thirdworldman wasnt good straight off the bat, he had to start somewhere too and now his skills are pretty good but im sure he could even tell you when he started people wiped the floor with him, his image is great but its not impossible, the texturing and lighting is what sets it off the rest is some simple modelled geometry.

everyone keep at it, and find a angle to your image which will make yours original.

Thanks for all the compliments folks, I appreciate the encouragement. Soulty, yes, that is the perspective I've been working toward..in fact, I've so far modeled everything around that perspective...i.e. everything looks like crap if viewed at a different angle. I'm open to suggestions though.

I also agree with what Soulty said about not quitting--especially not on my behalf. This project should be fun, and from what I've learned, every 3d project is a huge learning experience and there are so many directions you could go with it.

Aw this is so great!

People are actually participating in this battle!!!

Well, for all of us not-so-experienced 3d artists, this battle is a very good way to learn many new things and techniques. I mean, I have no idea of winning this battle, but from using what I've learned, and combining new techniques, I'm sure to learn alot.

A quick question, what are you guys modeling in? nurbs? I'm doing mine all in nurbs, and i'm having a little trouble modeling a nice chair, like the one that eisloe had.
Not asking for any explanation, but possibly a couple tips for all of us here?

Thanks guys, I'm working hard on it.

looking good eilsoe.... I wish I had time to join. Wanna give myself a modo project.

thirdworldman

I tend to sterr away from nurbs and use polygons exclusively...most 3d packages now (max, maya, xsi, lightwave, etc.) have really improved upon polygonal modeling, having added features such as subdivision surfaces (or sub'd's). This is great for any type of model, whether it be architectural or organic. Some people argue that Sub D's have rendered nurbs obsolete (no pun intended). I personally use XSI, but this is a new standard modeling method that can be applied to almost any program. Google the term, and see if there are any good tuts out there for your program.

In a nutshell, Sub D's allow you to work on a low density object, while in real-time, a virtual high resolution copy of that object is updated. The beauty of this lies in the ability to create organic nurbslike objects) with very little work, with even more accurate results than what can be achieved with nurbs. On the flipside, almost all architectural/structural modeling should be built with polys in the first place. I hope that helps, and if you need any more pointers about Sub D's, let me know.

Ah I understand. I mean, I try using polugons for more basic modeling, but you see, my father is product designer, (uses alias studio 9x) and uses only NURBS. So when he actually has time, he'll expplain nurbs and whatnot...

But I understand, and more tips would be Oh so great!

yeah would be better to talk about this somewhere else, basically Lw is a really good app to those who are use to its interface, seperate modelling and layout style.

other than that you have the best out of the box rendering system in any 3d app and a very capable and quick particle system.

You can also use Mental Rey, and check the "final gather" option. Make sure when you use it you set the rays down to like 10 or 20, or it'll take forever to render.
This will actually make all objects emit a certain amount of light depending on their brightness. For example, a stone wall will not make any noticeable light, but a bright white ball (a light bulb) will act as a omni light. I use this in almost all my renders to achieve a more realistic scene.

That shader glow thing isn't what he wants I think. To add it though, open the attributes of the material, and under the special effects menu you just increase the value from 0. That does not make the object a light though, it adds a glow to the object in post (after the render), and so it does no make any actual light. .... i might be thinking of some other glow thing, soulty's way might work as well

I will start my subway soon guys! I love the entries so far! Keep it up!

I guess it is kind of hard to try to complete an image that satisfies the mental picture that we have of it. Mostly, because of time, right now I have a lot to do too. But I wonīt quit no matter what.... I guess that, either I love too much to work on 3D, or I like to suffer and donīt sleep :krazy: Anyway, good luck to everyone!

Geez Grinch! Thatīs really cool! I hadnīt reloaded this page until I posted... and I didnīt want to double post :)

Anyway, itīs really neat! Congratulations, the texturing is really nice!

Some video tutoriasl, from begginer, to more advanced: http://www.ibiblio.org/bvidtute/

These seem nice, some of the basics of modeling are shown:

Anyone know any good tutorials on "light linking"

By "light linking" do you mean associating lights with specific objects?

grinch
March 11th, 2005, 04:26 PM
Gah BlueSun, I love your render, especially the lighting...

BlueSunD

You like it? Thanks! Please donīt hate Maya :P, be patient. At first itīs a bit of trial & error, if you started using Max before Maya (I did :)) youīll know how easy it was doing light linking. But this feature seems to be hard to find if you donīt know where to look, or is it? Give me a minute, Iīll tell you how.

OK, sorry for the delay. First make sure youīre in "Rendering" mode, select the light you want to unlink (at least at firs, since by default when a light is created it lights every object). Now, shift select the object(s) you may want to unlink, now go to Lighting/Shading in the menu bar, and select the option "Break Light Links" and thatīs it! Now do a tst render and see the result. To do linking, it the same way but obviously using the "Make light link" option. Hope it helps! And I like your image very much!

I voted thirdworldman. I'm kind of a sucker for the curved thing, though the train would have to be broken into soo many segments for it to actually corner a corner like that, we'll just assume it'd work :beam:
I liked the texturing and all the most actually, the walls are cool :thumb:

OMG these are all amazing! I can't imagine how much work went into these. I know nothing about 3d art/programs so I'm not sure what it takes to make curves and such. I loved Elisoe's for the openess and the pipes in the ceiling, BlueSun's for the tile work, and ThirdWorld's for the colors and curves. But I voted Grinch because the map on the wall is killer and looks very real. And plus I'm a cartographer so it just caught my eye. Makes me want to step in and take a closer look at it.

Great job everyone! This was a cool battle! :thumb:

DDD
March 14th, 2005, 08:03 PM
well someone issue the challenge. We can pick up where the BB contest was at. Basically a boxing robot or something like that. Not sure if we want to do realism and all that tho. I can pretty much only do it on weekends so a 4-6 week time frame sounds good.

No i'm talking about making a thing instead of a person. Character design means making a character (person) or some sort.

DDD
March 15th, 2005, 01:17 PM
hhmmm.....architecture would be cool. But I think that would focus to much on the rendering than the modelling. I really would like to do a character contest. SOmething robotic that leaves the modeller to make it as detailed or as not detailed. But it is up to you. I need to add more 3d pieces to my folio, so I am really going to do it the this time lol. Since the time frame will be so long. We should try to have intermediate deadlines or WIP posts to keep interest in the contest.

thirdworldman
March 15th, 2005, 02:45 PM
