Okay, so before Soulty, Senocular & Lostinbeta attack me I checked the forums and found no help :pa:
for those of you whom are familiar with Freehand, it has a function that makes it almost worth switching from illustrator... :td: (not really)
The PASTE INSIDE function allows you to select an image be it raster or vector and paste into any vector shape. (wonderfull tool!)
Is there any function that is similar and efficient in Illustrator?

Best I can think of is the clipping mask. You can place a shape over any other item, and choose to make it a clipping mask. Should produce a very similar effect if I'm understanding correctly.

that's what freehands is too... it's a clipping mask. it's just done a different way. what you do it take your shape lay it over the object you want "inside" it and press cmd+7 or ctrl+7 and it will make a clipping mask. to position it the way you want inside the shape use the direct select arrow and click the image and move it around.

Or if you're a menu person it's object -> clipping mask -> make. (Illustrator 10 anyhow)

The shape and the image? It'll be "grouped" automatically on clipping.

Okay, I am at work and am using an old version of Illustrator. The slice tool is very similar and works minus the grouped object. I have CS at home I'll give a whirl in a few...thanks though.

Freehand used to let you paste almost anything inside a shape, while illustrator doesn't make it that easy:
"Can't make clipping mask. The top selected object must be a path, a compound shape, a text object, or a group of those."
My top selected object is a a set of colored strokes blend together using the Blend Tool (W), by clicking on the edge of each stroke starting from left to right.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
