For those of us (ie me) who've never used fireworks, does it actually have a painting-like or stamping-like tool, like photoshop does ?

Out of curiosity, why would you recommend fireworks (and I've seen things such as scripts on your site and they do look interesting, and I'm quite curious )

That is the BIG downside of FW is not having those kinds of brushes. If anyone wants them, please let MM know ;)

The good about FW include:
- non-destructive filters. being able to apply, remove and reorder filters at any time in a non-destructive manner.

- symbols inlcuding button symbols as seen in Flash. This makes button creation pretty easy as well as allows you to create re-usable instances which can be altered and changed through a master instance (its also useful to convert bitmaps to symbols so you can scale them down and back up again without losing quality)

- integrated vector graphics which surpass anything PS has to offer (though, obviously, isn't up to par with Illustrator but we're only talking about one app here, not two as would be the case with PS + Ill)

- extensible interface allowing for custom commands and custom panels...

- and custom auto shapes like those found in Word.

- slicing and web export and support for multiple framed documents (like ImageReady... now its 1 program vs 3).

- an interface allowing for object selection similar to Flash making dependancy on the layers panel less of an issue (as it can be in PhotoShop).

... things like that.
