Is it possible to make a RPG (Role Playing Game) Online? So you can logg in and play with your "guy"?

I agree, it is possible. But, It takes a great ammount of patience, discipline, Imagination, and most importantly, the propper artistic and programming skills.

I'm assuming that you would want to use a database such as MSSQL and a language like .NET to serve to the pages. Or XML? Not sure which might be better to use.

FLEX might provide the ideal option after looking at that, but pretty expensive. I think it would just be a matter of interating a few tutorials together, such as creation of a user, logging in through a database, updating a database on logout's, and generating reports based on that.

I'm sure some ICQ app's have most of this in place, and might be a good idea to start looking there.

That sounds novel.... But when you lay it all out... Object interaction with PHP variables and databases in the backend... are SLOOOOWWW... Yes sometimes they can be fast but if a server doesn't create a new session right away... You could await for a response for seconds... In a MMORPG.. that isn't likely or possible...

Now.. You would have to study about creating direct connections with servers... Otherwise known as socket connections... Then this socket connection can transport data throughout a stream back and forth without 99% of the malfunction you could have occur with creating sessions.

Well, if you are a biginner, a multiplayer online game is not the way to go. You should try something a little less complicated.

Well, thats a good practice, but to me, the most rewarding is creating my own characters, art style, music style, storyline, etc. I think that you should try it too :).

Imitation may be the highest form of flattery, but it is also the worst form of creativity. For one, no one will take you seriously, since they'll just see it as a copy - you could have the most original, and fun style, but no one will care to even know. The only good way to create a game, or anything really, based on someone else's work is to get the rights from the creator - like Bioware's MDK2. Shiny made the original, but Bioware was allowed the rights to create the sequel, which turned out better than the original.

TObject interaction with PHP variables and databases in the backend... are SLOOOOWWW...

Couldn't you use sockets for communication? Run PHP as Apache module? Shouldn't that be a lot faster than regular http?

JoMan

I have no clue how to use php, but I've heard that what you are saying is faster.
