Ok everybody... after 4 nice pages of ideas and teambuilding... we are ready to move on to the building of KirupaVille...

Here are the TeamMembers:

The List
>>> this is the list to get a plot... post an interest to get on the list and name the size grid you would like... NOTE: MODS(Including Senocular) and LORD KIRUPA get priority over the bigger grids(plus a choice of custom grids)... this does not mean you will not get a grid.. but it means you may not get the size you want depending on the turnout.... here are the applicants so far...

I'll take a 1x1 plot. I've never done pixel art before, so I'll start small hehe.

I will begin work on the construct in about 3 hours. I'm at work right now.

nice...u guys got this going again. But with all the moving stuff and stuff... there's gonna be a lot of transparent gif/pngs so i guess this'll be pretty processor intensive

check out some tutorials, they are all over the web. I'm not extravagant pixel artist either. I have done my fair share of boxes, icons, and small houses. This will be a challenge for me.

berk - I've never worked a lot with pixel art either. This will be my first original pixel art besides those ridiculous pixel characters I drew for my footer haha.

MS Paint or Fireworks are great for them. I think it's all about us zooming in a lot, and drawing everything dot-by-dot. Almost any program will work!

senocular
January 12th, 2005, 03:06 PM
I think to start, animation should be avoided. One thing about it being pixel is that quality can be set on low without loss of ... quality, and that will help.

Some guidelines will have to be setup for completed entries though. Are all houses going to be external? It would be convenient to update if that is the case, but it also means each would have to be its own swf. An XML file could be setup to handle details and location and simply which houses are available for display meaning adding a new one is a matter of updating the XML file and throwing the swf in some common directory. Otherwise, the fla will have to be edited each time and the swf published and re-uploaded. As seen with pixel people, updates are far and few between in such cases.

Also, just a side note for FW users if you are not familiar with FW enough already, when working with the eraser tool at 1px in size, it erases from the bottom right hand corner of its erase outline and not the center. I've filled in a bug report already and I suggest anyone else using fireworks do the same:

I have been thinking about how this would work. I was thinking that you could put a container clip on each plot and name them plot1, plot2, plot3, etc. Then use xml to load each house into it's appropriate plot that way. Is that how you would do it?

senocular
January 12th, 2005, 03:37 PM
a container clip would work too. That would handle the positioning but would also require the attention of placement for each lot. As long as someone doesn't mind doing that, it would work (and might be a little easier than figuring out pixel location if the city setup is not very regular). Its just a compromise of manual work vs dynamic via loaded content. Manual is usually easier but less dynamic and sometimes less intuitive, especially if the project changes hands.

GreenLantern
January 12th, 2005, 04:00 PM
Well I was thinking that the layout could possibly change, because it's just a bunch of tiles. So if the tiles were ever changed you would have to go back through and find the location of each plot again, instead of just moving each container clip.

Hey, ill give a hand with the AS if that can be of any help!
And btw, i'll do as Master K, and and go for a one by one slot.

I'm confused about the lot sizes here guys, I DL'ed the fla file for the lots, and all I get is roads and some random tileplaced dirt...

is a 2x2 lot 4 x road-tile?

is it possible to load up a 1x1 tile for measure?

kirupa
January 12th, 2005, 04:17 PM
Does it matter from where the sun is? (of course it's in space sen! :P) If there is a standard location for it, shadows would be more consistent for all buildings!

senocular
January 12th, 2005, 04:17 PM
To get started, we just need to know the base layout. If its not going to be a grid (which would be the easiest way to go about it) then the street/lot layout needs to be figured out. And really, container clips isnt such a bad idea for irregular layouts as I would imagine changing layouts would be easier then since you would only be editing the fla instead of the fla AND an xml file.

eilsoe - I had that problem also, so I just used the 1x1 grid from uber's earlier post in the other thread: http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showpost.php?p=714276&postcount=42

:)

and about the sun thing, why not just go for what people always use...upper left... :)

Good point. ;)

Now, what about the XML file? What information would you put in it?

upper left for the sun it is! :look:

ScHAmPi

I dont really know what you mean here but I reckon you mean the sun being in the upper left corner. But that is not what people always use, I think. I've checked it at Isocity and there the shadows are placed as if the sun were in the upper right corner ;).

Anyways, I'm working on my plot too and it's also my first time to do pixel art :D, well, we'll see.

senocular
January 12th, 2005, 04:35 PM
Good point. ;)

Now, what about the XML file? What information would you put in it?

Good question. Id assume:

User's Name
User's Link
Lot Name
Description
Lot File Name (or URL to swf containing lot for actually loading it in)
Detail File Name (optional URL to swf containing detail of lot if implemented)

Anything else? Maybe a list of references to other lots who are "friends"?

GreenLantern
January 12th, 2005, 04:50 PM
User's Name
User's Link
Lot Name
Description
Lot File Name (or URL to swf containing lot for actually loading it in)
Detail File Name (optional URL to swf containing detail of lot if implemented)
LotID (Where the plot is located on the map) That's kind of an important one. ;)

It would be sweet if information like Name, link, lot name, and description were displayed in a tool tip kind of box when their lot rolled over.

Thats the idea ;)

and yes, lotID would be needed if not positioned by x/y location ;) (which I didnt allow for either :P)

thanks sen.. you are so helpful in the coding department... i know nothing about xml's...

I UPDATED THE FIRST THREAD http://www.kirupa.com/forum/showthread.php?t=81895

I just made most of my lot with the sun in the upper LEFT corner!! :scream:

GreenLantern
January 12th, 2005, 05:42 PM
We really should go with the sun in the upper left. It was mentioned early in the thread, and i'm sure others have started with the sun in the upper left.

It's prolly gonna support some kinda outdoor mini living room... maybe a couch and a tv...

this is just my initial thought. who knows what I might change on it :P

for starters I hate the trees... and the buildings need some more work...

GreenLantern
January 12th, 2005, 06:14 PM
I like the trees. I would make them a little bigger, but that's just me.

eilsoe

January 12th, 2005, 06:18 PM
Very nice one Eilsoe, I wish I could make mine that nice, well I'll try :D.
I have a question our images, we save them as GIF right? But in photoshop you can choose the number off colors used in the image? Should we select web or can we take the 256 option?

[uber]
January 12th, 2005, 06:21 PM
thats super nice eilsoe... i'm doing a 2x2 too...lol
but not as cool as yours...

ans... schampi... save a a gif... and just use how many colors you need.. but i doub't you'll use 256... and save it then... what kinda plot you want?

ScHAmPi

we got alot of 2x2's.. does anyone want to do 1x1's or a 2x1 or a 1x2... we can make room...for 2x2's but i'd like to see the smaller ones get filled too...

GreenLantern

It's rough but it works.

I used the penner easing equations so it might be a little processor intensive. Let me know if it is.

by the way, right now there are no edges so you can scroll right off the edge of the world if you want.

Alright well I just woke up, and these 2 KirupaVille threads are packed with pages of text, its taken me about 20 mins just to catch up on whats going on around the place!

First off GreenLantern - thanks soo much for your help with this! I just checked out the link in the above post and its awsom! tha nav works really well!! GoodJob :D:D.

Everyone else who has inputted idea's into this GREAT & thanks! Its good when alot of members on these forums all help each other out, especially ina project such as this.

Oh yeah and before I forget, id like to have a 2x1 square, if i cant have that just give me the next biggest under that....

Im going to start working on some road signs and other things for the main map, Good work everyone, & keep it up :D:D

I'm still working on the navigation. I don't think that a circle is the way to go. It's needs to be wider, but if it's wider than the map needs to be bigger.

lol same post time. Anyway before i start doing some things such as road signs etc, do you think we need them, or will it just clutter up the larger area and take away the design from everyones pixel creations? I mean if you look at the map, its going to get very cluttered with traffic lights and signs...

That should be fine xxviii. Im not sure how man 2x2 lots there are, but there are plenty of others, Im having a 2x1 (rectangle block), GreenLantern can be in charge of who gets what type of lots (example: sizes). Scandal has rocked kirupaville huh? Well that is interesting.

I have:
-added schampi and kirupa's building.
-put up the billboard
-added the truck. (the mirror on the one side didn't look right, i ripped it off :skull: )

I think there might be some problems with overlapping. Notice how kirupa's building overlaps eilsoe's.

I'll be at work for the rest of the day, so I won't be working on it, but whatever ideas anybody has let "team kirupaville" know and we will get right on that.

I do like the overlapping, I just hope it's not to much. We might just have to be a little carefull on placing some of the buildings. No big whoop.

Sen had mentioned having a detailed view of each building, which is a good idea. However, I think that is something that can happen in a later version.

If anyone needs any help with creating there house/creation for there plot, then PM me and ill see how I can assist you. Or you can just search for PixelArt Tutorials.

Kirupa - Love your house/building youv done its great especially with the 'K' rocket on top! GoodJob :D

The blimp is also a good idea, although too much animation may lag down this whole city, so we will have to watch it, but the blimp would be snazzy, and if no one can create one then i will...

GL - those links for tutorials that you posted are good too for people needing help, the also helped me a little just with making good glass. Also your doing a awsom job with the main part of this, Well done! :D - Oh and you also put my reservation in the right spot of the map too! Thanks :D

URBER - Good Morning :D lol - Your firefox piece suits its spot in KVille! Love it! -

CanadianGuy - What size plot would you like? 1x1,1x2,2x1,2x2?

we need someone to make the HUD(or heads up dsiplay fro the non gamers)... I started.. but i am drained of creative juice right now....

It needs to:

State the name of KirupaVille... and its est'd date: Jan,2005
have proper left,right,up,down, navigation
have an info box stating villiage information.. like population.. and plots available... and a link to sign up for a plot.
need to show enough space to view the town...

here's what i started on... just to show an example...
i know it sucks

ok, the buildings now load with xml.

I think some buildings will be static. Like the billboard, I don't think there is a need to load it. (btw, if you click on the billboard it takes you to getfirefox.com :thumb: ).

I just need to finish up setting up all the plots, get the hover text going, get the links on each building working.

Also when you submit your building you also need to submit the following a plot name and description. Is it ok with everyone if I just use your member profile as the link? I would imagine that whatever link to your homepage would be more current than the kirupaville link could be kept.

oh ya, and ummm kirupa *ahem *uhhh sir, your building was a little bit taller than the template, but for his graciousness we made a exception. ;)

Hey GL, is it possible for you to change the backdrop on KV? it needs to be either a lightblue to darkblue gradient, or maybe an orange to blue gradient... just to get the feeling of a sky behind it.. it looks so dark and gloomy right now :P

hey guys, this is looking awesome, i have dabbled in pixel art before, so would like to have a go at this, if i could get a 1x2 size plot that would be cool, that should be the same size as the awesome get firefox sign. if not then thats the size i want!!

just one more question, am i allowed to shamelessly plug my website by pasting my URL on the side of a building? or is that just too low? haha.

and i hope there is no time limit, i could see this taking a while, i hav some ideas, but i want it too be just perfect, as pixel art should be!

well, speak to you soon, laters, (and that is an awesome fork building!!) peace.

fork: That's a great first attempt, my only comment is the colors, they seem.. well... wrong. :-/

give it some stronger colors, cartoon like if you will :) then it'd be great... and fix the grass, it looks like you have a blend gradient on it...

Wow, there've been some very nice entries since I last checked!
I've found another pixel town like isocity, but it's waaay nicer. They've got the traffic lights working and all, and they have various neighbourhoods. You can find it at http://www.pixeldam.net/. Then you have to click on on off the neihbourhoods in the center of the page (it took me a while to find out how to view the town, that's why I say that ;)). I think it's quite a nice example.

I'd save each building as a swf... that would work..plus... eventually animating would be easier.....

Comment on above quote: Is it possible in an swf to use the transparent ... well sky. Cuz when i make a new fla I have to select a background color and I dont think theres an option for transparent?

GreenLantern
January 14th, 2005, 06:35 AM
Hey GL, is it possible for you to change the backdrop on KV? it needs to be either a lightblue to darkblue gradient, or maybe an orange to blue gradient... just to get the feeling of a sky behind it.. it looks so dark and gloomy right now. Someone (Uber I think) is working on some "edge of the map" objects like trees and water, and things. Once we get that I don't think we will need a backdrop because you won't see anything behind the map.

2 things... one can you please update my imagery... I had the bevels on my CD drive reversed... they are correct now.
2nd thing is... so what happens now? Any type of hover over bubble thingies or anything? 1. I'll get that done as soon as I get home (about 10 hours)
2. I'm going to work on the glitches in the map next (change the easing equations, lower the quality on the buildings that are loaded, lower the quality on the map itself, etc) Then i'm going to get some hover captions going. This shouldn't take me more than a couple of days.

FORKSTER HAS ARRIVED :beam: hehehe arrit here is mine.. this is my first attempt..so please suggest improvements!!!! Awesome. I love it. :thumb:
