I'm creating a Flash CD-ROM and need to pass variables to a database without opening a browser window. (purpose: basic user tracking)

Can anyone provide me some concepts/keywords for further investigation?

Never tried it myself, I'd assume you'd just use the loadVars class. If you used getURL to send variables, then yes, it'd open a browser window.

Thank you for these suggestions. I'm going to look into them.

And to the contributor who suggested this is spyware, I can assure you that it is not. It's simple tracking to see what percentage of the CD-ROMs are being used and if new media is justified in their marketing budget... really no different than checking your domain webstats.
