So he goes on MTV, and the interviewer(forgetname) asks him about him not being successful in the commercial hiphop scene.

So he decides to say something to the effect:

back in the day, rap nerds and some critics, gave me some shine when I was starting out

Rap nerds? He used to be my favorite rapper back then, I guess I fall into the class of "Rap Nerds"?

Why diss your inital fan base, when without them, you wouldn't even be on MTV?

Why am I mad? Because when none even knew who he was, I was buying his CD's etc. He was always talking about how great it is that people support him when he was nothing. Now he calls those same people Rap Nerds.

pfft.. Guess another person whom I will never support again. Out of all the words he could have used to describe his old fans, backpackers, underground heads, etc.. he chooses to make them look silly.

I've heard too many stories of this guy being an ahole lately, i guess the money and fame got to his head.

maybe he meant 'nerd' as in someone who, um, studies a lot of hip hop?

being called a nerd is always bad. People call me a computer nerd sometimes, but I make more money than them so they can kiss my butt.

and N.E.R.D. ...in search of

was a good album :)

you know what's funny? has anyone heard the talib kweli's remix of jadakiss' why?
(and this is his own rhyme btw)

...tell me why poor n*ggas get rich and forget where they come from...

i'll respond with a jada rhyme:
...and why do n*ggas lie in eighty-five percent of they rhymes...

and you've got your answer right here ;)

never liked the guy and never will...

who knows if he meant it in a derogatory way...

It does seem like the fame and success has gone to his head.. I don't know why he and Mos are so stubborn.. people have been cryin' for a blackstar reunion, but with Mos Def on a rock-and-roll guitar riff kick, and talib kweli letting success go to his head, my guess is that they will finally get around to it only after everybody has moved on.... atleast we will always have reflection eternal...

"ill smack the **** out of you, and continue my nerd rap,
makin money fist over fist, F--- what you heard..." - El-P

i think you took it personally without really knowing what he was meaning. He wasn't putting anyone down, he was describing the followers of the underground hip-hop scene...that's what you get called when you support local hip-hop or relatively unknown hip-hop artists.

They use that term all over Baltimore's scene, it's actually a backwards compliment that you would go away from mtv to support an artist. ;)

The shame is, he doesn't even LIKE to be on mtv, it's proven in multiple interviews that he could care less about it. And I think based on that alone, you can see his comments were meant to be a jab at the mtv viewers that think if it's not on tv or the radio then the music isn't any good. They're sheep, followers of what the populous say is "good music" rather than expanding their ear to someone like Talib who was and is a strong proponent for the underground.

Relax, he wasn't knockin his fanbase...he was backslapping the sheep and giving you a hi-five at the same time. ;)
