View Full Version : Site of the Week (November 20th - November 27th)
kirupa
November 20th, 2004, 12:34 AM
If you wish to be considered for this week, please read the summary of rules:
1) Reply by the end of November 27th to be considered for this week's award.
2) Include the URL and your email address.
Only the webmaster/creator of the site can submit.
Only one submission per person per week.
Submissions are capped at 10 each week, so don't wait or hesitate until the last minute. Entries beyond the 10 entry limit will not be eligible for the SOTW for that particular week.
Include a brief synopsis of your site inluding its purpose, or maybe some features you wouldn't want anyone to miss.
3) Your site does not have to be full Flash to be eligible. Whilst you still must employ Flash to some extent, we are also looking for the overall design and usability of your site, not just your Flash skills.
4) While it is understood that sites are perpetually under construction, please submit only complete sites. Do not submit a site that is less than 80% finished.
5) Submissions must be actual websites with sections and content. Examples of ineligible include (but not limited to) flash games, movies, etc.
6) There will be a private poll among the moderators and a winner will be announced.
7) No critiques or feedback is allowed in the submission thread. If you wish a concentrated critique of your site, you may start a thread in Site Check. However, mod critiques will be posted when a winner has been selected.
For more information or questions, please refer to the Official SOTW Rules. Once you have read and understand the rules above, you may submit your site to this thread. Sites not adhering to the rules above will be disqualified and deleted. Submitting your site is an agreement and acceptance of the rules.

Site created for an actrice. Personality was very important in this mission. The overall design had to tell what kinda person she is. I took pictures of items out of her daily life and started to play around with them.
Small admin/backend for tourdates & diary.
Splash-page (in Dutch) tells you that the rabbit always will bring you back to the startpage and high resolution users will have the site launched in a popup.
enjoy ;)

Congratulations to mezu for winning this week's SOTW! You will be featured on the main page of kirupa.com for this week. You may also post a graphical award from this page: http://www.kirupa.com/gallery/awards.htm
Good job to all the participants. One of the valuable aspects of SOTW is to get valuable feedback about your site and get an idea of how well it stands beside some of the best on the web. Mod critiques will be posted shortly.
Critiques will be posted tomorrow!

Again, thank you.

Sorry everyone - I don't think the mods nor I will be able to provide critiques for this week. I need to find more creative ways of making writing critiques less painful for the moderators :P
Once I am on my break though, I'll definitely write critiques if no one else beats me to it!

NO RESULTS ??
That bites!
Thats twice this site has been entered and not recieved any feedback or comments with which to base any changes or upgrades on.
Or even an overview of use or anything.
Same on a run thru asking for comments and critiques.
I guess I had assumed that the comments returned from entering it in this SOTW contest would be professional and worth considering.
After seeing how unprofessional and incomplete the results are being tossed together on a late basis; I can easily see that I'm about as well off with no comments after all.
I may as well join the masses who submit after 10 entries to just get the hits for all the feedback I've gotten or what I would think of any recieved after this post.
Thanks to all who visited my site and I hope you enjoyed it anyway.

Many of the mods post frequently and offer comments in the Showcase and Critiques forum: http://www.kirupaforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=22 You may want to try there for comments until the SOTW is being revamped a bit ;)

ok back::
i was actually suprised you were allowed to enter SOTW, i believe a site entered should have more than 80 percent of the site in flash. in any case:::
: first the elements on the site are too large in scale, everything is huge and basically makes it looks really unprofessional.
: the logo and symbol on the top of the page looks like they are totally seperate elements from the site, you need to show some constistancy in the design, there should be a theme to your site accompanied by your logo and coporate image.
: features menu is cool, but messy, messy meaning elements in the menu clash with other cells as it closes, the text becomes overlap and makes it look ..again.. unprofessional.
: your news features are ok, but really the design of whats around it kills this feature.
: the sub titles are boring and the images used in the News section looks squashed and not really creative.
: your flash work is cool, the graphs / pie chart.
in truth i dont have time to go through all your content, but based on design and first impressions, your site is too large, its elements , the type used in sub titles, the logo (which really is nothing special to have it so big to show off) the icons and images are boring the type is boring, the design boring....
you can 1: redesign the layout or 2: change the type and include some more creative touches to your site.. eg (for sub titles maybe use a tint of green from your logo as a background colour)
hope that helps..
cheers

mezu, I didn't vote this week, but here goes:
1. I hate pop-ups.. why?!
2. Nice transitions, clean design, on my TFT screen, the menu font looks slightly blurry?
3. Some menu items I had to click twice to action; then long "reaction time" before anything visually happened (accolades..what's that s'posed to mean anyway..?)
4. 3 things I critique in almost every site:
-disable menu for currently active section to avoid reload!!
-hilight it! (where am I?)
-error-check your contact form! (you'll get 2 empty mails from me :) )
5. I'd remove the arrows from your scrollbar because I tried clicking these to make it go up/down, instead of dragging.. (hey, I'm a newbie..!)
;)
5. Hide empty sections! (important events, awards..)!

Doesn't answer the question: why?

Don't wanna set up a discussion about popups, not the right thread.
There are more reasons not to use them, I agree, but used in a proper way, why not? It's a way off...Some food just tastes better from a different or a second plate.
I hate the auto-popups unrelated to the content of the site..
If there wasn't so much abuse, ppl wouldn't have become that harsh about them. Anywayz, :z:

As promised
comments:
beurtass:
clean simplistic layout
to the point
informative
tends to be a little boring as all section are similar.
might of helped if you introduced a 3rd colour to the layout, the 2 colour layout seems a little dull.
content animation is ok, but not original.
findal: (see previous comments)
wii:
layout is interesting
gradients for text areas and nav are too harsh (maybe a smoother gradient transition)
font for nav is too blocky (nav would looks better all lowercase or all uppercase)
animation through sections is ok, the images used are not original though
text in link area is hard to read over the metal link image.
drop shadow on layout seems a little too strong.
spastichild:
some funny explorer errors, in IE the splash page panels were centered but the text on the bottom was off center and off the panel, in firefox the panels are not aligned , bottom left is more left that top, and text on the bottom same problem
the layout of the site is great, really unique with that side panel, looks awesome, content looks good and i like how there is a new image for each section.
even though it wasnt major, i was just wondering why you created a panel for the audio button when you can just fit a stop and play next to audio type.
aku:
On the splash the blue and red text is impossible to read unless you go crossed eyed and the text starts to make sense
text overall in the site is either too small or just not clear, site is a little boring as there is only 2 section and a forum
design-wise the layout is nothing special, images used are screenshots of games, not sure if there is any post photoshop work there.
shivi:
splash image is brilliant, lol
original content
book turn works well
links rollover animation is great, sound on bottom thing with handle confused me.
mezu:
as much as i hate to say it, layout of splash and colour reminds me of [2a].
animation is nice and original
sounds work well with site and i personally love that sort of music.
content and layout works well, nice transitions and original images.
i thought maybe the nav button should of stayed down when clicked to show what section is current.
nice overall site.
dimmdesign::
splash page gave me a bad impression of this site at the get go, it looks very dull.
site is totally different than the splash and gladly so, site looks great, i really like how the site background colour changes in each section, also the white silouettes looks cool.
music is excellent, fresh, love the tunes.
font looks good, similar to one that im using on my new site :beam:
i think something is missing in between the audio and time boxes if you filled that up with a 3rd colour maybe even a white box it might even things out a little better.
nice work and btw:: "yasou thimitri kai kala Xpristounia" ;)
kristian:
first impressions i didnt really like the look to the design , it can works it just seems a little too much like there is 3 sections and not one site.
animation on the right panel with the brush dosent work, no simulated brushing animation so in the end it looks odd.
no idea what the colour bars are on the top of the panel , when click they rise and you rollover them for them to fall? what its purpose?
jontom:
i think i have seen this site before, obviously this site is image heavy, the text seems a little secondary, and is a little blurry so in result hard to read.
theres not much change to the site except for text changes and some introduction to some images, gets a little boring, graphically the site is nice, the nav is nice but content is lacking some energy.
-----------------------
ok some comments might be harsh, but dont take it as a personal attack, i just want to be real and put it out there on what i think,
i hope my comments helped.
cheers
