Hey everyone!
Here is the poll. Try to be fair and vote after looking at all the entries. While this new electronic voting system isn't paper based, try not to vote often or do anything that isn't part of a friendly competition :)
The poll will end on 2 December 2004.
Thanks to all the judges who submitted their nominations. Thanks also to Ammu Irivinti from aids-awareness.org (http://www.aids-awareness.org/)for providing the idea and prizes for this contest.
Cheers!

I have placed in my Vote
Dbarbarian did an amazing job. I give him my Vote. His Animation showed Good Transitions and Animation. Colors matched perfectly, and the Beating and Coaligation of the heart in the backround are Beautifal
This was a struggle for me since the Condom one seemed so funny. but the fact is, it didn't show as much information as did Barbarians.

I think verve should win. It's fun to watch and will grab a visitor's attention while getting the right message across. Excellent.
Was going to vote for rikiwaka's effort but verve had the edge. Well done to all you guys. It's been great to watch all of your entries. Much respect. :beam:

wtf!? my intro got messed up when it was switched to the kirupa page with all the entries... when it fades to black at the end to say protect yourself it fades to gray instead :q: :puzzle:
it still looks finehere (http://www.3dnirvana.com/Aids.htm) :puzzle:
also is there a way to keep my red background thingy around the flash, in my entry?
Thanks,

Thanks,
3dnirvanaI made the background color to the cell Black now. Hopefull this works better. Regarding the red-background thingy, no - I can't add that unfortunately. That isn't Flash, but if you had put the background thing inside your SWF, then there would have been no problem :)

thanxChanged it - I only uploaded the swf. I thought the color was self-contained within the SWF as opposed to being defined in the HTML :)

Hmmm - Well after viewing these entries id just like to say 'Well Done' to everyone who entered, I viewed them all and I think that everyone did well, but when it comes down to having to pick one that gets the message across and also has good flash tansitions etc, Id have to say that I must decide between: 'Verve' - 'slumgutt' - 'rikiwaka' & '3D Nirvana'.
And out of those 4 Im going to choose 'rikiwaka' as I thought that it brought the message across really well with the way he/she animated it. Although 'Verves' was also very well done, the animation was brilliant.
Again welldone to everone but especially 'rikiwaka'.

Dear Kirupa,
I got a mistake in my intro too, since it was used in a black background and didn't
realized,( a white column is appeared in my intro at the end ),now I fixed the file and
uploaded to this link. www.freewebs.com/nobodysir/aids.html,
May I ask for a permission to help me revise my intro in your server, it is much appreciated if the permission would be granted.
many thanks

My vote went to rikiwaka's remarkable intro, great thanks and great jobs to other finalists. Can I just add a black background to the cell and your Flash's HTML code? I'm just wondering, for that would make it a lot easier on me than having to download an SWF file, etc. :)
Hey Kirupa,
For some reason my intro that you posted was pitch black. I figured out how to fix it, and uploaded the new file back to the link I posted initially: http://www.geocities.com/hoomannoori03/aids.html
It should be visible now. Could you download/upload it again?
Thanks,

As for my competition...it's obvious I don't stand a chance, so it's not like uploading my file again will increase my odds of winning. I think Rikiwaka is by far the best one.

Verve's entry is 690KB ;) Entries can be a bit longer than 30-45 seconds, for we weren't picky about that. I or another judge may have clarified that in the forums.

It was about 60 seconds on my PC. I guess his animation was so captivating, that time just flew by :P
kirupa
11-19-2004, 11:17 PM
Rules aren't set in stone. I'm sure if any of the judges felt that the entry being longer by 15 seconds was somehow going to detract from the animation, I'm sure somebody would have pointed that out. Likewise, I don't think we disqualified any entry for being too short or too long.
Sometimes, common sense has to take priority over rules!
aknatn
11-19-2004, 11:51 PM
Yeah K, I thought it was well done, sometimes they need a little extra to tie together the animation, especially when syncing to music. I still liked H20's better though, hope he gets more votes :)

11-20-2004, 03:11 AM
slumgutt has got a really good text and the animation in connection is great! Strange that nobody has noticed that. Hard to choose between that one and rikiwaka's which is really, really well done too but with a more "standard" message, however right it is!
Great work everybody!
hey thanks aknatn, i hope so too.
flashtered, until now i had forgotten about yours. i knew there was another really good intro, and i can't see why it's not there, since it looked really professional imo.
honestly, i think verve's is great too. the only thing i didn't know passed the requirements for his was the "appropriateness for all ages" thing (since a kid is most likely going to enjoy the 'cartoon' and see little condoms floating around and inevitably ask what they are), otherwise i liked his better than rikiwaka's actually. and he should probably fix his button hit areas too.
but, i'm not a judge; heck, i'm haven't even been at kirupa.com for more than a few weeks, and not experienced with flash either, so i'm not even voting. i think there's enough people that visit or use this site who didn't enter to vote. so far, 42 is greater than the 24 who entered. i'd probably be tempted to vote for myself anyway because i can't decide between rikiwaka's and verve's, and ultimately i am biased to choose my own intro by default. (or maybe i will eventually vote for myself, if i only have 2 votes by dec. 1, just to make myself feel good about an afternoon well spent)
thanks kirupa for the contest. it was fun, and it was the first time i'd tried something like this. i can't wait for the next contest.
good luck to everyone

Sorry , Kirupa,
I just have a silly question, is there any rules to quailfy members who have the right to vote?
say , they must be registered before the day the contest begins.
I think why not I registered as other different members and to win enough votes for myself. I know this act sounds ugly, but I think a rule is worth to be set out, if it is fair
for all players......hehe.

rikiwaka's introduction was very nice and quick, and nice use of graphics, but didnt really get the inofmration across as much as dbarbarian's introduction. Thats where my vote went. Nice transactions and the sound effects were just amazing and went well with the feel of the introduction. Very nice, liked it alot. Well done to all of you though, all very nice introductions.

nobodysir, i'm not very knowledgable about ip tracking, etc, but i think when we vote kirupa/mods know who voted for who. so, if all of a sudden 50 new users show up and vote for you, it would be obvious, and so i don't think there needs to be a rule.

i just don't know what happened?
and kirupa has been ignoring it right now. (i think he's looking for a 'quote' to
answer me).Like I mentioned to you earlier, your entry was late. I can't go back and tell the judges to reconsider their choices after the deadline - which was not up for debate at all. So, it won't be fair to the other entrants who did not get chosen (even though they submitted their entry on time) if I were to add your entry.
You had 2.5 months - I hope it's not as if you didn't have time to submit it on time ;)

rules are not set to stone right?
post the 24 entries, then make everyone choose?
how about it?
to make everything seem fair. Why? Just because your entry did not make it on the list? There will be other contests - I guarantee it. If you want to solicit comments, find another thread to do that in.
I'm not going to change the contest structure because you are upset that no judge selected your entry.

as to the current choices, most of the entries doesn't even 'speak' for aids awareness, or the aids-awareness.org site.
in fairness, it was created great, but it went too far from your objective,
aids awareness.
You're not the one to decide that though, it's up to the judges.
dbarbarian
11-22-2004, 01:27 PM
You want a review. Ok. Here we go.
FIrst of all, the pictures are well done. The black and white effect was pretty well done. The sound effect of the children was also pretty good.
However, it goes downhill from there. The sound effect of the heart was very low quality.
The text was very boring. The random red letter in the text got very old, as did the transitions. It was all white text, fading in and out. Over and over again. And again. And again. There is no variation to keep the audience interested. Its just very dull overall.
If a person visiting the site watched that intro, they would probably watch 2 or 3 of the flashes, and then probably skip the intro due to the reptetiveness.
I am sorry if I sound harsh, but you asked for a review. The judges made up their minds about the top 10 (stated in the rules) and yours wasnt top 10. If you don't like the way it works, you shouldn't have entered in the first place.

I voted for dbarbarian. His flash animation is very remarkable & he had blended in with the music well that beats the other competitors. I almost voted for rikiwaka for the contents (when I forgot to switch on the speakers) that I find simple yet it has conveyed the best message but the music used is not suitable in my opinion.

I know it’s the old clique but I really did love them all!!!
Not knowing that much about the organisation (Maybe this will be a good opportunity to check it out!!) I wasn’t too sure at whom the campaigns would be aimed at, but my 3 finalists of the 10 finalists are
dbarbarian - Beautifully done, poignant and a great balance.
Rikiwaka – Simple, effective and professional in a design & advertising sense.
Verve – Just right for me, it’s got a good vibe to it, gets a message across without being to “doom laden” which can turn some people off.
Also worth a note was h20, which I thought was excellent, possibly let down by less than perfect graphics.
Bearing in mind a professional consultancy would throw maybe 4 or 5 creative & technical bods at this and not get any better results, I think you have all done the site proud!!!

gosh! i'm in for a surprise.
I've just checked back on kirupa after a long time, was really down with my workload and i'm really floored by your responses guyz. This is really so heartening to c so many ppl being appreciative of the work, some even voting for it.
To be honest, i put it only cuz i felt i have an idea that shud or cud at least be shared with others. Beyond that i least expected to be even considered for the contest leave alone being considered to win it cuz my intro runs a whole minute well past what's specified in the rules. Then there was the ? of 'appropriateness' for all age groups (thou i don't really agree with this appropriateness issue cuz if kids've to told what AIDS is then they better also be told what condoms are. Some've also pointed out the informative aspect of the intros, I think intros shud just set the mood, website is very well there for information). There, a very special thanx to kirupa for being so liberal with the rules. I think i've got my award.
Personally I really liked H2O's idea and Slumgutt's way of putting his but I raise a round of applause for everyone who cared to send his/her entry. Its the concern and spirit that counts, that all of u have shown in plenty.
Great Show!

It seems like there is a tie for 2nd place. Basically, what will happen is that the two tied entries will be placed in a run-off poll that will go for a week. From these two entries, the 2nd and 3rd placers will be decided :)
Congrats to rikiwaka for winning. A more formal announcement will be written tomorrow. As of now, the poll is closed.
