So my cars alternator has been on the Fritz since late summer. I am an idiot for not taking care of it. When me and a few buddies drove down to New York from Boston to see a yanks/sox in the enemy's backyard I kept getting a message on the display "battery no charge". When I would accelerate harder it would go away but when I idled the car it would come back. So when we drove back it had no problems. I knew exactly what the problem was. I let it go.

Over the next few months it would happen occasionally then go away for weeks.

Last Friday I was driving home from work and it came on the display again. It didnt go away. Now it was snowing like a bastard so traffic sucked. Got all kinds of great messages like battery volts low, service engine and what have you. I was about to pull off the highway to stop at a gas station that was right off the exit when everything went away and appeared fine. Like a complete and total stubborn tool I decide to try to get it home. (Another 15miles)

The next exit was right up ahead but I was stuck in traffic and it started again. This time the computer was disengaging power to my abs, climate control. (it was kinda cool it knew to do that, I was surprised) I managed to get into the breakdown lane and it dies for good. Had to pay $150 to get it towed. Again like an arse I towed it to my house with all intent of replacing the alternator and battery myself. Little did I know the my huge northstar engine took up soo much room that I had to go from underneath blah....scew that I cant do that. I can barely identify the alternator as it is.

Two days of catching rides into work from co-workers and not having a car.... I come up with the brilliant idea to try to get enough charge into the battery to get it 3/4 of a mile down the street to the service station. Valiant effort but I failed as it died as soon as I hit the street. Used a buddies AAA card to tow it 1/2 mile because I cant push it on a divided highway in rush hour traffic obviously. Drop it off awaiting a call to see what its going to cost.

Today I got a ride into work and got the call from the mechanic. Because its a Cadillac and the labor required to get to the **** thing I am looking at $450 - $500 for a new fricken alternator and battery.

Just great right before Christmas. F luxury cars sideways with a big fat rotten purple dildo!

my first car had all sorts of troubles

first the clutch went and this happened frequently for the rest of the time I had the car. I say frequently, I had the car 8 months it happened 6 times...not including the 50 times I had to bleed the clutch just so I could drive the thing

accelerator just went to the floor with no reaction from the car

brakes went (that was fun cause I was driving the car down a hil at 45mph at the time...such fun to put your foot on the brake and nothing happens)

punctures (multiple, seemed to be one a month...tip: never buy remoulds)

and finally the car died when the suspension collapsed and I had to abandon it outside a court at 1:00 am and walk home...only to get home and realise I was locked out.

cars, I don't own one now...I wonder why ;)

my old car, a '93 ford probe, was so beat up that i called the dealer and just told them they could have it back. the p-o-s accelerated on its own and didnt hardly move most of the time when i gave it gas. plus the last day i had it the god forsaken thing stalled out on me while i was pulling out onto the freeway connector by my house. almost got toasted. :*(

good thing i payed attention when my dad told me the best thing to do when your car stalls is turn it off, punch the gas and start it again. luckily it came on and i let it rip.

sucks for you.

You only stall on two occassions 1) trying to impress by burning out. 2) going on to a motorway. Ive stalled (well it was the distributers fault really) going onto the motorway. Its pretty scary. Especially with a 15tonne truck coming up your backside.

Since I got locked out of my car two days ago and learned a good trick... I'll pass it on.

I have Verizon Wireless, but I'm sure other plans have similar deals. Verizon has a roadside assistance add-on for $2.99 / month. Under that plan you get tow service, they'll bring you gas if you run out or come pop a lock. Well I called and figured out that the service was usable as soon as you activate it. So I activated it and had the tow truck come unlock my car (would have cost probably a hundred bucks otherwise), and now next month I can probably cancel the service, but I think I'll keep it on since I tend to lock myself out rather often.

Moral of the story is you probably could ahve paid a lot less for that Tow Fester.
