man that so does not whip the llama's as. :(

playing the same song,
winamp used ~8k memory
wmp 10 used ~14k
iTunes...oh not much. just about 37k, that's it. but it's got a great selection of proper radio stations...but winamp has that too! and there's alway live365.com heh. iTunes doesnt have an internet TV browser, as far as i know..winamp does.

i could go on, but i dont want this thread to be hijacked ;)

edit: realplayer 10 (http://www.real.com/) used ~10k memory, it's a pretty good alternative too.
there's also always dBpowerAMP (http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dbpoweramp.htm)

Winamp is no more? :scream: :upset: :crying:

Buuut, they DID say Netscape was going to be abandonned, and then they brought out another new release. So maybe this abandonment won't stick either and Winamp will get another update sometime in the future.

iTunes is awful, I hate how it's always running in the background even when I haven't opened it yet. Ugh.

For its part, AOL says it remains committed to Winamp, stating it is "a thriving product that AOL continues to support and will continue to support."

 Look how they mangled AIM over the years. And don't get me started the AOL software itself. They should just kill winamp now before they drag it into adwareville. Not to mention how much AOL will probably charge for winamp (I'm still surprised AIM is free... I would expect them to have a 'Pro' version that you pay for that doesn't have millions of ads)

I use WMP10... it uses very little resources (less than winamp did on my system) and it looks sleek ;) But I believe there was another thread on this discussion (whether winamp of wmp was better).

It is ashame though. Winamp was an awesome player.

Was nice, indeed, but why install another player when WMP does it just as well, minimizes to task bar (nice small player), will always be supported, has free encoding tools etc.. There were so many free players out there a while ago, I don't even remember all the names, and nowadays, no-one speaks about them anymore..
And Winamp 5 works well, who cares if it gets updated or not, is anything missing from this release?

It's all about Media Player Classic (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358)

This thing plays ANY format and has a tiny footprint.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I love my winamp and have always cuddled it. Now it's going away because the big bully AOL is abandoning Nullsoft :(

Maybe winamp will be bought by another company.. or hopefully it'll go opensource? :D

AOL is abandoning Nullsoft because Time Warner is abandoning AOL. They aren't as big anymore.

woo hoo to AOL getting abandoned (I hated them ever since I knew what they were - and that's since I was 7!!!!)
boo hoo, WinAmp won't be getting updates anymore.
Scew you, iTunes :thumb: I just plain don't like you! (besides, in Canada "it" is way cheaper)

Well im not shocked to see this happen, never have been a winamp fan. Always been a Windows Media Player fan. Im not shocked to see it go either, like some other people said, why download another mp3 player when WMP10 does it all for you and can even be shrunk down into the taskbar, I love WMP10, i have had no problems with it at all, and it even has a nice sleek design....

ive been using itunes since it was released for windows. its a great app, with mp3 ripping and storing features also easy playlist features are what makes me like it. Ive never using winamp for more than 2 minutes, i installed it , looked around and unistalled it, i know its a powerful app, but with wmp10 and itunes available, its hard to beat.

I used WinAmp for a few mins a few years ago to convert a playlist to HTML. That feature was removed in that version (V3 I think), so ahmed saved the day by converting it for me. I really haven't had a need to use Winamp since :)

Well fingers crossed AOL does another back flip.... idiots.....

oh well V5 works fine... shame if there are no more improvements... But it works fine the way it is.

I think AOL just wanted the network that came with Nullsoft, just kept Winamp going long enough so they were not sacking everyone the moment they got there hands on Nullsoft.

Winamp...gone! :'( although i didnt use it much, i used itunes, but i thought winamp was good for music, but when it came to playing vieods is sucked! windows media player 10 is good, just i dont like its memory usage. but itunes is more! im daft!

Winamp nice lil low memory prog. Itunes sucks crap through a straw. WMP10 all the way (although gettin quite bulky with useless features).

jmayo86
November 17th, 2004, 12:53 PM
Shingouki i dont agree..maybe itunes does take alot of memory up, but windows media player 10 is notfar behind it, plus media player like you said has useless features, where as itunes is like winamp, just a bit bigger etc.

But winamp will be missed, cos it was one of the best media players around, that played music very well.

Realone...pfft

Windows Media Player is terrible, it looks awful (as most Microsoft software does), it crashes the whole time, organises your music poorly, has crappy visulisations and dosent support iPods. I dont notice the memory usage, as I have tones of it.

iTunes and Winamp own Windows Media Player.

jmayo86
November 17th, 2004, 02:33 PM

I cant find the article right now, but they said that they just lost some more members, but they are still around, i think they mentioned that they wont be developing as often anymore though.

iTunes is so simple to use, i have like 60 playlists and it handles it like a dream. SmartPlaylists are the shiz too!

November 19th, 2004, 05:01 PM
Lol since ur a MAC fan, it's obvious u prefer ITunes:P But think in terms of programming, look at the resurces ITunes takes on Win and the ones Winamp takes. ITunes was made for good comps, while Winamp works even on pII(might work on 486 too, i haven't tried lol). It's a long way that ITunes has to make to replace Winamp.

jmayo86
November 19th, 2004, 05:45 PM
Ok, itunes may not be up to the standards of winamp with the memory etc, but arnt computers getting better? computers can take alot more now, most computers these days about 512mb - 1gb of memory. So itunes is the shizzle - and i am not really a mac fan, i hate them i just like itunes as its nice and simple to use and works nicely.

(Could someone tell me about these super playlists? i dont know what they are...never heard of them. So if you know maybe PM me so you dont hijack the thread. Cheers :kommie: )

Computers are getting better, but even if you got 1gb ram you wouldn't want to use a lot of it for an application like a mp3 player, would u? I have 1 gb, but i usually need it for graphics applications and i definetely would like to keep more mem free.

jmayo86
November 19th, 2004, 06:09 PM
yes i guess, but itunes doesnt take that much up does it? i mean if you have 1gb of memory, surely you cant complain if it uses a couple of mega byte up lol.

Also does anyone know why my task manager has totally f**ked up?! ive attached a screen shot.

You mean Smart Playlists right?

They are really cool, I use them all the time (basically they automatically take songs from your library and put them into a playlist based on the terms you specify, for example, you want to put all the 5 star rated songs into a playlist, so you click a few buttons, and presto, iTunes does it all for you! It also updates the playlist, which is pretty cool)

iTunes takes up like 30mb of ram when I have it running, I have 1gb so its not really a problem....

Most PCs (and Macs) come with at least 256, if not 512 so its not really a big deal, its not like you turn on iTunes and your entire computer slows down.

I am glad your not a programmer... To many lazy programmers around making bloated software because they dont know how to write clean code and figure why bother putting in the effort to streamline their code.

I couldn't write a program to save my life.

But I remember doing a C program at uni...
Mine was like 300 lines long for a simple number to Roman numerals thing back and forth. Mine wasn't even complete in that it only worked up to tens of thousands, when it had to be millions. If I had finished it the way I was going it would have been 400-500 lines.

The lecturer did the entire thing in like ten lines.

Some people just shouldn't be writing software !

cheers for explainin to me about smart playlists. ill have a play with them!

I do do a bit of programming..but its all web based, so i guess i dont konw about using ram etc up. But itunes for me works fine and doesnt bother me if it uses ram up, it doesnt slow my pc down and i doubt it would slow alot of others down unless u got like dreamweaver, flash, photoshop, fireworks and itunes open! and have a 486!

Yea heard about it on Cnet, this is sad, apperently the last member said they had nothing to really do, and it will be a good addition to have one of these winamp founders on the iTunes team, for those of you who own a iPOD will definitly know that iTunes SUCKS! BIG TIME! i had to install and reinstall and install over and over again to have it work, and it takes about 1,500 kb of memory ! and sorry but windows media player just doesn't cut it for music, video is much better than that of winamp.... that's my two cents on the matter!

Wtf are you taking about, most people that have an iPod use iTunes, its the best for your iPod. Why dont you suggest a better alternative for transfering music to your iPod. Cant? Thats becuase there isnt one.

Butters
November 20th, 2004, 06:28 PM
Yea there is, Music Match Jukebox does, but it's awful.

You cant drag songs from your iPod because its a breach of copyright if your sharing your music with a friend as you said jmayo86, the person your giving it to might aswel be downloading it free from P2P.

Apple dont want any lawsuits, so they try and keep it one way only.

I have to say, WMP blows a big one...leave it open for about 48 hours streaming mp3s while you work and you'll have memory leaks coming from everywhere...now Winamp is a different story, I've had it open for over a week and my cpu still runs perfect. Winamp is a great program, sad to see it go down the drain. As for the AOL subject, I'm glad they are losing business, they are one of the biggest spyware companies available to any computer. I hope they rot in hell.

Winamp is nice because it's easily skinnable and relatively small- Winamp2, that is. Winamp 3 and 5 sucked badly. They got awfully bloated.

WMP can just go die, for all I care.

iTunes is THE best. I have over 30 GB of music, and iTunes is the best way to organize it. PLUS, its interface is very smart about playlists, ripping, burning, CDs, etc.
Right now it's 7MB of my memory. Hardly ever gets above 14 MB on my computer.
