m just gonna say 56k dial up / good broadband is too dam expensive in australia at the moment. there is a $29 plan but it has a 200mb download / upload limit and all the unlimited plans with no speed cutting are at least $80 for a 512 / 128 connection.

You are definitely right on that Byrnzie. There are not many companies in Australia that provide good broadband services. There are Optus, Iprimus, Telstra, IDX, Unwired. There are more people using cable I think than broadband in Australia. Pricing for services are too expensive as you said. Im on 56k as well, actually on 50.6kbps which is my highest. Optus provides such a high cost for somone that uses alot of dlownload. As you said, $80 a month or more depending on how much you want to use. The fact that there are so many large companies in the u.s that they all compete for customers which is why nearly every household has either broadband or cable. Competition leads to low prices for good deals.

Byrnzie, if you do want to get broadband, try www.tpg.com.au (http://www.tpg.com.au/) . Its $26.95 for unlimited I think on 256/512.

You guys that live in the u.s, which company is like the largest or the one that gives the best deal for a low price?

i was looking at them for the $80 a month 512/128 conection but i have to convince my dad to get it, maybe after my mum gets back to work / i get a job he'll be convinced and pay for it. i want a 512 /128 vonection because i play on US game servers with a lower ping. (my friend had 256/64 k and it was too slow he then moved to a 512/128 and he says it works fine for games like CS and UT2004)

It depends on where you are in the US. If you live in urban sprawl then there are several options, but if you live in rual areas there is usually not much to pick from. Sometimes only satellite, which is very expensive, about $70 per month. Typically the best value around my area (central california) is DSL from SBC YAHOO, for about $26 you get a claimed 512 to 1.5, this is a large gap because if you don't live near a DSL junction box you seriously loose bandwidth, I've seen it drop to 56k. I'll stick with my digital cable and cable broadband, all together I pay around $140 per month, but that's for all premium services and I use the hell out of it.
