So a friend and colleague, David Quirus (http://www.nocturnal-illusions.com/), approached me eariler in the week and showed me his website Nocturnal Illusions (http://www.nocturnal-illusions.com/). He then confessed that his website did not appear on any google search for either his name, David Quirus (http://www.nocturnal-illusions.com/), nor the site title, Nocturnal Illusions (http://www.nocturnal-illusions.com/). Granted, the site name has some fierce competitors such as an adult anime game aptly called Nocturnal Illusion (http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/review/R46707.html), but there's no reason why his name, David Quirus (http://www.nocturnal-illusions.com/), wouldn't bring up his own site. So I says to him (not verbatum), "David Quirus (http://www.nocturnal-illusions.com/), I bet I can have your site listed at the top of a google search using your name by the end of the week." Of course I wasn't sure if I actually could or not... but I did. LESS than 48 hours is all it took for his site to be at the top of a google search for David Quirus (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&q=David+Quirus&btnG=Google+Search).

How'd I do it? I simply created a link to his site on my site using his name as the link text. That with a little luck and knowing that there are only so many other David Quirus (http://www.nocturnal-illusions.com/)s out there is all that was needed.

Just goes to show how powerful one little link can be ;)

thats what makes google so relevant. Because it puts a lof of weight in what the link text says.

Gongrats for your buddy. He mist think you the shizzle now :thumb:

Wow, with those kind of results from just one link, imagine the results David Quirus (http://www.nocturnal-illusions.com/) will get at nocturnal-illusions (http://www.nocturnal-illusions.com/) from the nine in your post above!

Cool.

ok, i made a page with like a million links that went to joegill.net with joe, gill, and joe gill, but no dice. any suggestions? do i have to click on it a bunch of times?

senocular
February 10th, 2005, 09:58 PM
It also deals with page rank - where the link is coming from. making links to your site on your site pretty much does nothing. What you want are links on other sites to your site where those other sites have a high page rank. These include "important" sites like msn.com or yahoo - big portals and things of the such. If you have the googlebar for IE you can see the different page ranks for each page you visit. The more links out there to your site from sites with a high page rank, the more important your site becomes and that determines how google lists it.

I got lucky with quirus because its a pretty obscure word so not many people are linking with it. On top of that, my site has a fairly decent page rank (for what it is) so a link there went a long way

deletedUser459
February 10th, 2005, 10:43 PM
is there any other way to see page ranks?

p.s. Joe (http://joegill.net)

:P

----edit--->

so, what pages could i put it on? i just made a xanga with it. i don't know how i could get it on msn or yahoo...

hl

submitting your url to google with the words Joe Gill <www.JoeGill.net> repeated EVERYWHERE on the site should work i guess

then check searching yahoo it should be there soon, yahoo leaches off of google, then google will search yahoo and back and forth until google has a high page rank for you

Don't expect to get on Yahoo or MSN. They were just examples (www.apple.com actually has a 10/10 page rank which is higher than both of those). My page has a 5/10 which isn't great, but it could be worse. You can check yours here:
http://www.top25web.com/pagerank.php
Yours is currently 0. :alien2:

My rank was achieved because people link to me. Why people link to me is because I offer resources and keep a fairly up to date news blog covering Flash and Fireworks and other tech news topics. In fact, one of my Fireworks tutorials is linked from macromedia.com so that helps my site a bit (mm's site has a 10/10 page rank). Since I have resources people like/want, a lot more people link to my site making it more relavant making google like me more which in turn makes google like the sites I link to more which allowed me to get DQ's site to the top of a google search using his name where, before, he was no where to be found (probably because no one linked to him before).

What to do. Well, it doesn't hurt to have content that people will want making it more likely people will link to you. Also, try to get friends to link to your site from theirs (especially if they have a higher page rank ;)). Using a link to your site in your footer in forums certainly doesn't hurt either.

hmm...i'm trying to think of something that people would actually want to go to my site to see. any ideas? guitar related of course. i'm starting to record more, and gonna try to see if i can sell some cds, i could just put my music on there maybe

anyway, i went to an old forum i was at for like 2 years, and linked guitar to my site like 50 times in my SIG, so its now on all the posts i've made.
