What's it with girls and Math. I mean It's like. Oh.. Math.. that's so hard. While they learn a language in no time and what's the differance between learning a language like german and learning a language like perl. I mean girl have reached the absolute peak of blind-fool-ish-ry.
I have loads of problems with learning german and frence, But I just learned C in 6 weeks. and I've had frence for over 5 years and german for 4. and I still can't speak a word of both.
Same With girls they take math. Takes them ages to learn what would take me 1 hour. But i guess it the same with me and languages.
But come on girls, don't drop math. I know it might sound silly to be able to conculate the dx/dy of a f(x). But really It's handy.. :P For something.
This is the main difference between girls and boys, ladies and gentlemen

And T-O, this isn't always right. ;)

Well, my sister studied Mathematics at the technical University of Vienna,
I'm more into economical things.
I speak German, English and French (and I know a bit of Latin),
so ALWAYS might not be quite exact :D

Exactly what I was thinking, firegambler.
My sister is an electrical engineer, and she basicly loves MATH!

TO, you know what happens when you stereotype? Everyone tries to prove you wrong.

T-O, I guess language doesn't come with a compiler that checks syntax, eh? :P

Blondes are amazing at math.

Blondes are amazing at math.
Because you help them, and get 'something in return' ?

I have seen lots of girls that are amazing at math, for one thing 2 of my calc teachers were women and my statistics teacher is also.

You know, frence. The Frences speak it, those people who live in Frence. You know, right there under Belgiam and above Spaen.

Well male and female brains are structured differently.
And
Maths, Language, and Programming are all different.

Wher do you guys live.. I mean I've been around on more then 4 schools.. mostly it's 400 guys and 4 girls doing those studies.. So yeah, there is a small margin that does like it. :)

It's dy/dx for f(x) not dx/dy. Dx/dy will get you a useless number, while dy/dx will get you the slope of the function. It looks like you have disproved your theory. Ouch! :P

well, if you learn 'programming languages' quickly, this doesn't mean that you can learn 'spoken languages' as well.
programming languages is more into logic and analysis than the ability to remember words and how you can say them.
regarding girls with math, there is a girl doing computer science with maths in my uni, and she's bloody hell smart :tb:
she's almost a geek !

True.. But we call it the "dx dy", or "discriminant"
not so ouch :P

I have to agree with T-O to some extent on the math part...
I'm a math major, and most of my upper level math classes (not calc I, II, or III where you have quite a few non-math majors) are a sausage fest. I would say for every 2 or 3 guys there is 1 girl. Overall, my school is 61% female to 39% male.
I don't have the statistics off hand, but there is an engineering school nearby that is supposedly 80-90% male.
I looked it up. University of Missouri, Rolla. "Women represent 21% of the undergraduate students pursuing math, engineering, and the 'hard' sciences"

I am pretty sure that the stereotype is not true all the time but I can say that I am horrible in math..pathetic even and I dread every second of it that I ever had to take from grammer school all the way through college... I usually passed but the few C's I ever got in school were always Math---Give me english, give me a language anything like that and I will learn it in and out but not Math...

There are just as many girls who like Math as guys who like Math, and girls who hate Math as guys who hate Math. ;P
e.g. I am a Math/CS major, hoping for a PhD in AI. I get high 90s in anything Math related, and low 70s in anything English related. I usually don't try when it comes to Math, although I occasionally spend my spare time reading about Math. I have once failed in an English class even after trying my absolute hardest. (I do like reading though.)
However, my boyfriend is an English Lit. major, hoping for a PhD in whatever he can get. He gets high 90s in anything English/Philosophy related, and is afraid of numbers. He doesn't try in school, and spends his spare time reading and writing and not doing arithmetic, and he hated high school because of Math classes in which he studied 24/7 and still ended up with a 49% (one less than a pass).
Most of my high school was actually like that- the girls excelled in mathematical subjects, while the guys were generally better at history/english. Guys also seemed more interested in hardware and mechanics, although there were quite a few girls who broke that mold as well.
Anyway, my point was: ;P
