Is it just me, or are there a LOT of people who somehow shoot up their post counts in like, a month? I consider myself pretty involved in a lot of conversations on kirupa, but I've seen people that join after me, and somehow have 1000 posts about a month after they join. Are there even that many topics? I know there are some hardcore spam threads(*cough*kteamnonaffiliatedcult*cough*), but even those have some funny and constructive stuff in them. Strange times.

If you want, you can PM me or another mod the names of those who you think may be unnecessarily spamming, and we'll check out their posts and PM them if they are getting too much of an adrenaline rush from clicking the New Thread or Post Reply buttons :)

but i must say since i finished that, my posts per day average has dropped about 8 posts, so you can say i'm sort of losing my addiction to K-man :P

Hell ya. And sadlly enough some of the other big members have stopped posting or don't frequent the forums as much; lost, vts, kit, mike, lava, ju88a, thor, alex, even unflux (i know he's got work), asphaly & so on...
Dang :sigh:
Kirupaforums ain't what they used to be. But I can't tell if it changed for the worst or the better. Quality has also improved, hasn't it..

I'm all for randomness in the random forums, so long as it uses a bit of creativity.

I wasn't really complaining... it was more of an observation. ;) But I do think post count determines a "rank" of sorts. Mods are obviously mods because of their bold names, but just because someone posts madly in the word association game (I'm guilty too. It's fun! ;) ) doesn't mean they should be asked questions, or looked up to because of the status that comes with the "1k+" rank. Maybe an improvement of the voting system or something to determine status? I dunno. I like the current system, but I'm just putting up some "helpful advice".

I like to think that post count does not matter, though I know that that's not true.

Same Here
A couple years ago when I first came here It was certainly all for learning purposes. Then I joined the fourms for the same reason. I usually need help more than I can help.
But.
The conversations, Debates, jokes, battles and funny stuff is what I am really addicted to. Now if I am considered a spammer for hanging out in random and participating in whats going on here....well....whatever.
If the powers that be have a problem with that they can ban my account and IP. But then of course I will have to mutilate them, thier familes and anyone thay have ever cared about

i still lurk the forums a little, not as much as i used to though.
But, I think that post count should be deactivated for when you post in random, i have noticed a lot of post that just have like "haha" but nothing to add to the overall conversation, which in return, it just clog's up everything. Also, a lot of threads go off topic before they start. lol...
Either that or just to return the fun learning enviorment and not just a race for the highest post count, just disable post count all together. But its not my decision. :)
but that's just my 2 cents...

There is nothing wrong with posting a lot on any of the non-help forums. The post counts are really just a number. If you see somebody blatantly spamming with a whole page of HAHA or w00t posts, then a mod or I will deal with it.
Also, post counts don't help in becoming a mod. What you actually do with those post counts do.
So, if you all feel like relaxing or posting in Random and the other talk forums, feel free to :P

Funny that you mention this Kirupa as I just donated a portion of my post count to the less fortunate "Kids Helping Kids with Post Counts" association. I also printed out a few hundred of my random posts and used the paper to create paper mache animals with the old folks at the home. i don't understand what's this big deal with post counts. I've been a member for 3 years and all i have is 800 somthing posts. the main reason for people haveing so many posts is probibly their ither Double Posting(like i have seen 1000 times before) or just running on the word association thread

I remember seeing this forum, and I'm sure many have it, that had a ranking system using credits/points. I think the way it worked was: people who you helped would give you a certain amount of points.
In other words:
> Someone posts a question.
> I answer their question.
> In the process of thanking me they also give me a fixed number of points (5 for example) for me to display proudly under my username. Of course, the points accumulate.
So instead of people being ranked by the number of posts they have, they are ranked by the number of points which only other people can give.
I think something like this would be a good idea, unless its been tried :ne: .

I agree though wizard. Some sort of "helpfulness" or "productive" rating would be pretty cool.
lunatic
September 2nd, 2004, 06:38 PM
I think that would be just as meaningless as post count. Some will give you feedback, some won't. Sometimes your friends on the forum will pump up your rating just to be nice or whatever.
Something I saw that was useful on the Macromedia Cold Fusion forum (and is probably on their other forums?) - there was a checkbox to mark the particular post within a thread as the answer to a question. That particular post would then go to the top of the thread. Of course, this wouldn't work in something like the resizing slide show thread but might be useful in other places when someone finally gets something figured out. This feature would be nice for certain forum topics, like MX, ActionScript, MX2004 etc. but wouldn't be necessary in the Talk forums etc.
Just a thought.

EthanM, I agree in a way, but I've noticed problems going by on the forums unanswered lately. This sort of system, with an "answered question" system, might encourage the people who post a million times to get their post counts up, to maybe be productive and "help out" a million times instead. I dunno. If you reward such activity, maybe we can get some of the weirder questions sorted out.

But what if it only existed in the "help" forums and only the person asking the question (thread starter) could give points?
True, there will be people taking advantage of this... but they can only do it for so long because eventually they would get tired of having to start a new thread and give their buddy 5 more points.

I think the concern is that there are people who have lower post counts, but spend more time writing answers in the questions and info threads who feel like they are somehow viewed as lower on the popularity or social status poll here at Kirupa.

DariusMonsef

I don't think it's a mod thing. I really think it's a popularity thing.
I think people by nature look to people with the most post counts as to be the seasoned cooler members and so people want to have their posts counts higher too.
What's funny though is that some of the really great developers don't have that high of posts counts and because of it aren't as "popular" as some other people.

I remember that the official Java forum had an unique way to solve this problem. On its forum, it had something called Duke Dollars. You start off with, say 100 Duke Dollars. If you have a question, you would bid off 10, 20, 30 or whatever amount of D.D. for it to be answered. After you get a bunch of D.D., you can go to the Java website and redeem some prizes - just like an arcade.
I was thinking that we don't really need the prizes on Kirupa Forum, but could use the D.D. system to show who has helped out how many times. This number could be put under the avator.
