I got an early copy from a friend who works @ a local game store. All I can say is, BUY IT. (even if you need a new video card). This game is INTENSE. If you think Resident Evil or Silent Hill are scary.... wow. You're in for a trip. Anyone else tried it out yet? I've logged a good two hours.
I wasn't the biggest fan going into it. I was more looking forward to HL2 and such, but after witnessing this, I think I've got a new favorite game of the last couple years. The presentation is AWESOME. From the menu's, to the animated and HIGHLY interactive computer screens, everything is polished. Props to ID on this one. Score another for the home team.

The movie makes it look really fast paced and scary two things i'm not good with.

It just:
- went to google
- searched for doom3 's official site
- find out it was the obvious www.doom3.com
- watched the trailer
- pissed my pants.

According to [H]ardOCP, you don't really need a powerful system to enjoy the game. They said the game plays extremely well on 640x480: http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQ0 (contains a ton of graphs, screenshots, and comparisons)
I will hold out until another, less-scary, game based on the Doom 3 engine comes out instead :P

Doom3 is single player only right? (forgive me for not finding out for myself but its hard to do much surfing on a SHARED AOL DIALUP CONNECTION)

Ditto :ne:
And I don't think it's only single player... Since I found this article about the multiplayer capabilities (didn't read the whole thing though :P)

Now, if Doom has a co-op mode for the campaign, that would be excellent! It's less scary when you tag behind your partner(s) who get devoured, mauled, slashed, shot at, jumped, etc. by demons instead :P

that would be pretty fun co-op dom like doom 2

Co-op is always nice. Developers have a habit of not putting co-op on PC versions (grrrrr) because the network code would be so hard to implement, and it's slightly impossible to have two people on the same computer (unless, of course, you get two USB mice and some crazy drivers).
Consoles, on the other hand, don't need networking code. Yay!
I do hear that the Doom3 engine is quite awesome on any GeForce3, 1.5 Ghz and above system. Anything greater than that are supposed to just get you past 30fps on max quality. And as flash dev's, we all know what kind of difference fps past 30 makes. :P

Man I also remember the first time I got my hands on that game. About a year ago, it was so intense, like you said. I couldn't believe the elaboration of detail on the characters, totally extreme!

You mean the Beta or something?
Ow, ow, and will a ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 do it? :beam:

August 2nd, 2004, 02:03 PM
Ah it was like a beta. It was called Alpha. It was funny, the menu's didn't work, you had to open console and command your way into the game. And it was only one mission, but still enough to make your pants moist :)

I played the alpha, but it seriously doesn't compare to the real thing. I wasn't that excited about Doom until I played the retail, honestly.

I saw the greatest deal in the paper for Doom 3 yesterday. You buy the $55 Doom 3, and a $50 "gaming mouse", and you get $10 whole dollars off!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those of you that can't play Doom3 I highly recommend Unreal2. I just got a gig of ram and am playing it again. Hopefully I will be able to play through the whole thing this time.:D But it's a great game. Wish I could play Doom3 tho...:(

Those chainsaws actually have a funny story. You read in one of the PDA's you pick up that some guy ordered a bunch of jack hammers, but they shipped him chainsaws. It was a complaint email or something. There is some funny crap in this game too. Just kinda dark and strange too.

Ive seen gameplay for Doom3 an amazing game but I have to tell you there in no game scarier than the suffering (ps2). Doom 3 is like resident evil 2 and 3 combine but the suffering is like the whole RE series put together (on a scary scale)
Disco-Stu
August 3rd, 2004, 04:22 AM
I don't know man. I've beaten the suffering. It's frightning. But play the first couple levels of DOOM III and come back and tell me what you think. I wasn't scared of the videos. The immersion is the craziest part. Turn up your sound though. This is some of the best stuff you'll ever HEAR. (not to mention look at)

I was going to hait out for the XBox version because I didnt want to have to shell out a ton of loot for a new video card. (Stupid ATI 9200)
But I am gettting a free...yes free 256MB ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. I am so pumped.
My company makes all kinds of thermal management products and often buy things to test out new materials on. A guy in R+D told me he has one on order to tear down and test and its mine when he is done with it.
thats some good shizzle right there.
Doom 3 here I come.

The game looks like a lot of running backwards while something chases you and lots of turning around to kill the enemies surrounding you.

You should probably put a warning on that link. I clicked on ONE of their screenshots and look what happened:
(P.S. I had no spyware before I clicked the link [Infact I had just reformated my disk] and it took a total of 37 minutes just to load up iexplorer, leave the spyware homepage, get spybot and run the tests. There were 53 processes of spyware running at once, once you end their process they restart.)
I contacted George and that site is now on the Axis of Evil

Do you think the game will run (at a playable speed, like a constant 30 or so fps) with a Mobility Radeon 7500? (With the Radeon 7500 I can get about 90-200 fps (while overclocked in widescreen resolution... like 1280x861 or something.) on Counter-Strike depending on what map and where I am.

I'm upgrading my computer specifically for this game. Mainly processor for now. My lower end athlon xp doesn't meet the requirements and it end up being a chopfest. But my GeForce Ti4200 at least lets me kinda run it at 640x480. I guess I just need one of those 6800Ultra's ore something. (yeah, I'm dreamin)

hahah, surge protectors have saved my life a few times!
I have a GForce 5900 and am very happy with it. Although when I boot up doom and ask it to pick the "optimal" settings it defaults to 640x480 on medium - ouch.
But I just bump up the screen rez to 1024 and it works fine. The ODD stutter, but not much.
Also, I have hooked my card up to my tv and used the "clone" function so what I view on my Desktop is on my TV and since I have a wireless mouse and keyboard I have been playing this game on my TV and it's Awesome! Things arent as crisp but it's a bit lighter, I can see more and the Screen is much bigger - I love it! Not to mention the 5.1 sound I have coming from my home theatre! :thumb:

Yeh, I've had Doom 3 for a few days now and it is one **** scary game. I'm running it on a Radeon9600XT 256mb/P4 2.6/1gig ram and it's fine on full detail 1024x768, but with no AA or AF, that seems to slow it too much. For anyone who loves immersive gameplay and doesnt care so much about multiplayer (which sucks) BUY THIS GAME NOW.

LoL... I love this game (although I can only play it like once a week)... you know how they say like those stupid Resident Evil games were supposed to be scary... riiight. Well this one boasts about it and lives up to it. It's awesome.
What makes it scary is that when you have to use your flash light and then see an enemy you have to put away your flash light and hope that your target hasn't done some nifty ninja moves on you and is still infront of you.
One thing that bothered me about this is... even though I bought this game... because I have CloneCD installed... it wouldn't let me play it... so I had to get a fixed exe so I could play a game I BOUGHT... how dumb.

Just picked up this bad boy today.
It runs insane on my new card on full deatil.
I am not usually scared by games but this friggin thing almost made me crap my pants on a few occasions. Especially when I first started. I like the interactivity with your world too. It just kicks monkey arse.
I love how things in the enviorment can scare the hell out of you too because you are so paranoid.
Alright enough forum going back to Doom3
