be patient little fella
576kbit/s is faster than isdn (64kbit/s or 128kbit/s), but if you compare it with a 10 Mbit/s (==10000 kbit/s (anyone abled to tell me if it's 10000 or 10240 kbit/s ?)) which would be something like a T3 connection, 576kbit/s is slooooow
<- has a DSL Flatrate with 768 kbits/s and is happy with that

One thing that gets to people over here is that you can get broadband for about $17 USD for unlimited downloads but they dont read the small print and there is a 200mb download limit, which would explain the low price.

Tested out the connection in my new dorm room, and here are the results. <drumroll>
2005-09-02 23:12:11 EST: 5667 / 2884
Your download speed : 5803772 bps, or 5667 kbps.
A 708.4 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 2953735 bps, or 2884 kbps.
From this test: http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=97 This is weird in a good way. My old room a floor below could not get faster than maybe a fifth of the above speed.
:P

lol. u beat us all.
1201 kb/sec down
419 kb/sec up
(i've used the same test kirupa used).
my brothers probably downloading something downstairs so mine isnt that accurate. ours cost like 23.99 or something like that (unlimited everything).
//edit these arn't accurate they are much faster... lol forgot i have a torrent downloading and im talking on TS.

A 507.3 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 518481 bps, or 506 kbps.
you may brag :P
edit again: a few days ago, i was checking out MIT website, and i found out that you guys get T1 in hallways and almost everywhere, which is just really cool!
this thread inspired me to search for internet conn. lines, and i found out about OC lines. OC - 192 gives 10 GBPS, and cost? uhhh, i think $400,000 + actually you have to provide a lot of personal info to them, and then they'll give you the price quote. Bill Gates can't even afford that one!

...although it should be a 2Mbit download rate. I updated 1 month ago from 768 to 2000 kbit/s, but the download speed didn't increase (upload did)
I guess it's a problem with the attenuation :(
(definately no network problem on my side. I've put my laptop directly behind the modem and it didn't get any faster (Laptop has a 1gBit Network connection)

If your on DSL or ADSL, hopefully you use a router. If you use a USB modem, it's slower than what you should really get for download.

thats not dsl speeds at all. i would check your wire going into ur house. same thing happened to me turned out they used really cheap wires ran a new wire to the box from the main one outside. walla.
von thats really messed up your download should always be faster than ur upload (unless u have a special internet plan). i would get that checked out.

I guess you are too far away from your provider's next server, and I doubt there is an easy way to fix it.
...but feel free to share the problems with your provider's service hotline, and share the answers with us. (i'll give it a try too on monday, if I find some free time)

Well, I am sad to announce that mine is by far the worst out of all 35969 (<- number subject to change) members here at kirupa. Taken from this test (http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=97), my results are laying in the pile of crap below:
2005-09-04 02:34:19 EST: 7 / 5
Your download speed : 8133 bps, or 7 kbps.
A 0.9 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 5276 bps, or 5 kbps.

As a matter of fact, I just signed up to a new ADSL provider with
12mbps speeds.
Divide that by 8, and you have 1.5MB/s (yes, 1.5 mega BYTES a sec).
Of course, that'd only be from Australian servers. I'd expect at least 500KB/s to 1MB/s from other places :D
