w00t! I am really very happy for you. You will enjoy it a whole lot. If you have any questions drop me an e-mail, hit me up on iChat or on MSN (I will PM you if you dont have them).
I will try to compile a list of things you will need - and where you can find a lot of good, free applications that you will find VERY useful in your journy to come as a Mac user.
So did you get the 17"? If so let me know how that is! I am going onto my second PowerBook at the end of the summer because i cracked the LCD screen on my 12" and it is acctually cheapter to replace the computer than it is the screen. Get a good solid case for your "baby" because at the prices they go for you dont want to be in my shoes, believe me.
Well have fun with it - like i said if you have any questions dont hesiate to ask at all (that goes for all Mac users and converts).

Ya, I'm thinking of getting a Mactop (mac latop ^_^ so spiffy) but what are the advantages of one?

Congratulations, how much did that set you back if you don't mind me asking? I'm still using a G3 Blue and White at home and was thinking about upgrading to the latest and greatest.
Here where I work though, I have to use a PC. Its not bad just a little bassackwards is all. I also have a PC at home, strictly for doing at work related design.

Thinnest and Lightest in the industry. A 17" Sony Viao will run you a whopping NINE POUNDS while a 17" PowerBook is 6.9 pounds and 1" think - which in person is super light and super thin, let me tell you.
Also a Mac is faster than a Windows machine anyday - my 867mhz Mac will oudo my 2ghz Windows machine any day at any time.
In order for you to really even begin to understand why people love the PowerBook and iBook series you really have to see them live. Where do you live? I will find you either an Apple Reseller or an Apple store that is close to you so you can go in and check them out. After you do - i honestly bet you will either leave there with one, or want to leave there with one. Hell you might not even want to leave there.

Well they look much cooler under your arm when you're walking around. People will know just by looking at you that not only are you up on technology, you carrying around a laptop but you're also very stylish. People love stylish people. People will most likely like you more for having a "mactop"

I got the Powerbook 17" people.. It's not the newest 1.5ghz (I have to pay my trip too ya know) but I imagine the difference in performance is small... I saved more than $800 on buying the "old" one ;)
but the big problem is... I WANT IT NOW!!! :beam:
specs:
just the normal stuff.. you know, 1,33ghz, 80gb harddrive, bluetooth, airport, 17" display etc. etc. + a bluetooth mouse (apple ofcourse)
but the ram memory is 1,5GB, I think that should be enough, right? ;)
Hansel, please contact me on msn if you want to: johan[at]bostrom[dot]se
Cheers people, I will hopefully post my 1,000th message on my new PowerBook :beam: :beam:

rofl ethan, I kinda meant the technological advantages. I know of course Final Cut Pro is a big advantage. Anything else though? So many people have macs and say they are great, and I believe them, I'm just skeptical because alot of programs aren't (or didn't use to be) mac friendly. Such as Microsoft VB lol j/k. But seriously, I'm heavily into video editing and heard Mac's are good for that type of business. Is this lies and deceit? Or am I just SKEPTICAL!!!11one!

the IBM t41p will beat the crap out of your mac ;) ...just kidding. I thought some time about buying the 15'' powerbook.
cheaper and better for me (I'll pay 2100€ for it, while a 15'' powerbook would cost me 2300€ (with student bonus,...))
Advances of the t41p: better display resolution, longer battery times, and I am sure the 1,7 Banias can compete with (/beat!?) the power G4 1,33 (although I found now benchmaktests proving that), faster HD, cheaper, and it's not a Mac ;) (-->I can keep my software)
advances of the Powerbook: dvd-r (would be quite useful, but i think I will buy one for my main PC instead), looks kind of cool
1,7ghz banias Centrino-class Processor
ATI MOBILITY FIRE GL T2 - 128 MB
Average Run Time : 6.3 hour(s) (vs powerbook with 5 hours)
802.11a/b/g network
31.1 cm x 25.5 cm x 2.7 cm == 1'' height
2,3kg = I think thats about 5pounds weight (vs the 15'' powerbook with 2,5kg)
...
nevertheless: congratulations to your new powerbook :D
definately rocks!

Yeah yeah.. but you know, I'm tired of having to reformat my computer every 2-3 months. That's the biggest problem I have with the PC platform, it just won't stay stable. And is it stays stable, the harddrive get so filled up with sh*t that it becomes useless in a matter of months.. And no, it's not because I'm [doing stuff that I'm not allowed to talk about here at kF] with DC, it's because it's PC. My dad has7-8 PC's, all with Windows 2000/XPpro, and they are all having problems. Files get corrupt, chkdsk runs at every 10th startup etc... I'm sick of it :ogre:
So, I will welcome my new mac with open arms, and if it causes any fatal error or messes with my files the first 3 months, I will personally beat the **** out of it :P
One day left now :stoked:

if you take care of it it's not a problem ;)... i've had my PC for a few years and never had to reformat. just keep on top of spyware/adware/trojans, and they don't get the best of you. and dont' be an idiot clicking on "free $million if you click the monkey" ads and "free viagra" emails... with 200k attachments...
not that i wouldn't LOVE a mac... but i just can't see myself dropping $3000 when i can get an "equivalent" pc for $1000...
ohhhh if i was loaded... :(

Exactly...my win2K laptop hasn't needed a re-format once and it is about 4-5 years old. Still stable as ever too.

Wow... Over here, every windows computer needs a reformat every now and then.. They get so slow after a while that they are impossible to work with! And yes, they are all cleaned with SpyBot, Anti-Virus software, they are defragmented, and still files end up corrupt and everything just fails :(
