This really stinks. Being in central Florida (lightning capital of at least the US), our area must have been struck by lightning the other day. It crapped out the wireless network router in our house. Looks like it came through the cable (I guess?) to the router, and from there to the lap top and mac G4 that were both plugged into it.

Now I can't get online w/ the mac, and it doesn't look like its reading the external CD burner, either. Can't find it. Looks like the only computer in the house to make it out undamaged was the PC in the back that's got the wireless internet hookup.

Anyway, does anyone have any idea as to what exactly was damaged on the mac? Recap-can't use the high-speed, and it can't find the burner. Other than that it seems to work fine. This really blows, because my wife just got a suped up G4 free from her job, but we can't transfer any of the files over now.

the internet dosen't work and dosent read external drives? The ethernet card, and firewire ports proboly just got fried, i'm afraid I think you'll have to pick up a card. I don't know anything about firewire ports, so just do what Digital said and take to shop for that.:thumb:, hope it all works out for ya.:)

Isn't there somethig that you can plug into the wall, then plug your computers into that avoids this problem?

Isn't there somethig that you can plug into the wall, then plug your computers into that avoids this problem?I use a surge protector now for both my phone/dsl connection and power. I fried an old cable modem a few years ago because of lightning.

I'm glad I have a surge protector too. The other day lightning knocked down a large tree near the entrance to the neighborhood. Im' sorry to hear that your g4 is having problems. I would take it to a shop or a mac store and see what they can do.

We have a surge protector, but there's no connection for the cable/high-speed. Fortunately the whole system didn't bite it, just those things I mentioned. The other G4 that my wife got from work wasn't even plugged in to anything at the time, which is good. That's the better one that we were going to start using anyway. I just need to transfer files from the older one, though.
