Hi guys,

Yes the multi-talented, the one you all love to see (yea right), just got Maya 5 from his beloved father .

I'm starting to like Maya and I'm a little used to some stuff.

Well I'm a beginner...and I want to know:

1) Do you guys know a tutorial on how to render your final work in all types of formats? Like the full animation, or just one frame, or in CLAY form as some of you see online...and I also want to know how to render in like quicktime (.mov) format and stuff to publish on the net and/or edit in AE.

2) How do I add texture and stuff to my final model...If I make something...how do I add color to a certain side, or some fur or some texture, or some clay texture...

If you guys can gimme 2 or more tutorials on how to do each, I'd be grateful and start some work to show you guys . Thanks a lot.

Here is what I mean by clay:

That clay look is just radiosity, usually with a light dome, bounces set high. I dont do Maya but for LW it is under the lighting properties oh wait is the camera properties...any way sorry I did not help but someone will come along. But I know that is a radiosity render.

ok not to be annoying or anything, but search the forums, if not go to the sticky on drawing and design and go to the many 3d sites that are mentioned. and search modelling, if that dosent work go to google.com and search modelling in maya.

you will find it in less time than it would take someone to post a link for you.

this is what was the forum was made for, i wanna know of a good tutorial that helped sharif out, i didn't direct the question directly to sharif because i didn't wanna limit the responses, i already searched google, nothing really interesting came up(through out 5 pages), i forgot all about it, untill sharif posted this thread, might as well post my question here anyways even though his talking about rendering, what the big deal. thanx for the link!

have you tried the help files?? theyre pretty decent but for rendering no matter how many lights i use i can never get that realistic look with my renders and its driving me nuts i personally recommend this book (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1894893344/qid=1087134636/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/102-9452519-6084941?v=glance&s=books&n=507846) it will teach you the basics of modeling with polygons and curves as well as animation, rendering and some other stuff which i havent gotten into yet but its a great buy i also have the dynamics book but i havent read that yet not until i finish with this book :-/

the big deal is that in a matter of a few seconds i found pages of tutorials on maya and modeling. in any case i dont think sharif modeled that car, as he was just showing that as a example, althought i dont doubt his ability to achieve that in the future ;)

no beef with you dude, i like to help out, its just that its all there for you if you search a little.

hope these links help :smirk:

also there is a resource sticky at the top of this forum. This forum is not a replace ment for the manual. Or a kickstand for the lazy. While I do go out of my way to help alot. Sometimes it is just plain faster for you to get your answer by searching. Or using the sticky post.

Yea guys, I'm just a beginner :). No way I modelled that ferrari up on the first post.

Alright soulty...I just did a super quick glimpse at the links you provided...and are you they are for beginners? Like I don't know how to set all those properties and how to set them...

I mean, the forums tutorial looks bad. But the Part 1 and Part 2 looks really good.

But does maya 5 come with mental ray final gathering :h:? Is that like a built in plugin?

And how would I render the final image to a jpg or a quicktime movie so I can show you guys?

And how would I pick what color clay it is?

final gathering is part of mental ray that came with maya 5 as a alternative render, which enables you to use caustics, GI (global illumination) and other fancy named features. you may need to check out rendering tutorials with maya before you try to attempt the sorta render you posted in your first post.

check out http://www.digital-tutors.com/digital_tutors/main_maya.htm
or search for some tutorials on render basics in maya then after that you should be able to work on those tutorials.

Yea cause when I was using the Part1 tutorial...the ball on the table was colored and I wanted to know how they colored it in the first place...

I still need to learn how to select faces of a model and select what color it is so when I render as clay...it looks clayish.

I know how to sort of change the bg color...but how did they change the floor color?

Sorry for so many questions but its frustration when you wanna do one thing but you cant without changing a billion others.

I am not familiar with MAYA. But the questions you are asking are simple program functions, like material color. I would suggest searching the help files.

Yea I know...simple a** things and I'm the only idiot who doesnt know it.

Some more samples if any of you can help me out here :):

http://www.keldesigned.com/v3/images/reel.jpg

Nice shapes (very easy to make) but the texture looks glossy and colorful and clayish with a ball with reflection and the whole thing is shadowed. Simple stuff.

http://www.keldesigned.com/test/CGFN.jpg

Comic geeks footer. Simple text, smooth clayish shape, with white bg and shadow on floor.

Thanks.

Whoo hoo!

I learned how to do all that thanks to soulty :)! I just did that tutorial one more time and experimented a little bit :beam:. I learned how to:

- Have a bg with a floor and also change color of these.
- Add a certain color on a object.
- Render to look super high quality.
- Have shadows / reflections (super glossy ones too) / refractions.

Now to make my robot (yea right), lol. Thanks guys :).

Grim - I didn't make anything. But for my new site I am planning to have some cool futuristic 1000 mph mini ship (lol) thats on some of the pages. I want to animate it so bad but I don't know how to export my final animation as a format...

Thanks a lot for asking though. I have a sketch or two on paper, which I am still trying to develop. After that, I'll start modeling and should be done with it in 2 days after I start :).
