what is IEview?

One thing that doesn't work... on this site www.clantds.com, the fading links don't work :(

IEView, if I'm not mistaken, is an extension that lets you right click and choose "View this page in IE" from the menu. Very useful.

I am obsessed with Ctrl-T.

wow Ctrl + T is pretty neat and to the other thing i like just mirroring wwebsites and playing the little games you can get from the extention section and they install on their own! :D

A nifty feature is the ability to associate bookmarks with words - now, I have two letter kF access :D

Go to "Manage Bookmarks" and change the keywords.

Just thought I would share this, kind of a groan about IE, but also how helpfull it is to use the IEView extention in Firefox, cos it helps you notice things like this:

I am obsessed with Ctrl-T.
You got to it first.
I too love that feature... and I jsut realized (seriously, like just before I started typing) that if you double click in the space above the current window you get a new tab! Neat!

this now!

:trout:

but we really ought to get back on topic!
Thought I'd tell you all how to get to those flash files in the cache. I would often just save them from IE's cache, but I found that FF's cache was, well, hard to find. I figured out how to relocate it, but that didn't help. I had to finally figure this out:

*in a new tab or current url, type about:cache
*under disk cache device click list cache entries
*many files will show, all the files in the temp cache. Simply use good 'ol ctrl+f to search for .swf
*click the one you want...
*in the newly loaded swf, just go to file>save as, and there yah go!

Don't know if this is common knowledge, or if there is an easier way, but that's how I do it.
Now start saving those strong bad emails ;)

So I'm about fed up with IE, and thinking about switching to another browser. I keep hearing about this firefox. What is so good about it? What makes it better than IE?

The only thing that I really know about it is that it does weird things wirth certain tables. I have seen threads were people have said "hmm looks funny, i'm using firefox" Which is something that I don't want.

I would go to the firefox website and look at the features and stuff, but I want to hear honest opinions about it.

I find it faster and more friendly. I prefer the booksmarks, it has tabed browsing and you can hide the downloads widow, and keep a history of everthing you download. Heaps of extensions such as "Adblock" which is *fantastic* at blocking flash, image and iframe ads. the mentioned IEview extension, which is handy if you do happen to come accross a badly design site. It support PNG transparency properly — try it, its not a pig or bloatware so if you dont like it just uninstall it and its gone!

That's purely because stupid idiot designers don't bother consulting web standards (http://www.w3.org) before making their sites.

Anyway, it's better than IE for everything. It's faster, more stable, more standards compliant, more secure, prettier, a more complete browsing experience, more themable, and more extensible.

How does Firefox compare to Mozilla? Which one is more preferable?

Mozilla is the full suite. Firefox is cut down, and useful if you already have a mail reader and things like that :) it depends on the situation, but Mozilla is going to be phased out eventually, and Firefox and Thunderbird will be left.

Oh I see,
I mean I only use Mozilla for web surfing, but one thing that I don't like, is the fact that I can't copy images. Can you with FF?

June 13th, 2004, 11:13 AM
Yes I do believe there is an extension for that. You can download (for free) lots of useful extensions from their site. :hr:

Ctrl + W to close the current tab. I was looking for it forever since in Safari and FFMac its just Cmnd + W but i finally found it!

FireFox has always been faster than IE, tabbed browsing, downloads manager, etc. Its like the Safari of Windows.

CTRL E = nothing.

why wait? Dump IE now while there's still time! FF is great even though it's not a full version yet.

reverendflash

I've been using .9 for a week now.

It is more stable than my latest and greatest IE installation... it crashes at least once a session due to corrupt code usually.

I've been using Avant Browser as a replacement for IE for a long time now. Check it out at www.avantbrowser.com. It's completely free, and owns. Firefox rocks too, but I've had some crashing issues.

radioxromance
June 16th, 2004, 02:27 AM
Hm, I downloaded it but never installed it. I mean doesn't it simply run offa IE? So I mean, it simply takes already buggy browsing software and adds features that FF has, well as far as I can tell. But I guess if your hardcore reluctant to change, avant it is! I eventually will need to try it out for myself.

Disco-Stu
June 16th, 2004, 03:57 AM
Ehh, I liked firefox, but avant is about the same speed. And most everything runs on IE (people don't usually make sites that dont), so I don't care. AVANT has a WAY better nav too. No other windows besides ONE that can go to the task bar. Complete tab-based browsing. With great options too.

Well FF has a good interface also, IMO... and it has tabs also. And the fact that people make sites that are sloppy is just frustrating for designers pushing for standards... not that I completely can comply. I jsut believe in standards, and if MS wants to considered a serious browser provider, it needs to take browsing seriously. Someone in another thread put it best that we don't need MS telling us how to better enhance our browsing experience and doing it for us; we need simple, stardards compliant browsers with accesories available.

Off topic: Disco, I've always LOVED your footer/screen name. He's one of my favourite characters! And since you went seizuring... whoa! haha

Disco-Stu
June 16th, 2004, 11:59 AM
I'd definitly agree on the standards issue radioxromance. But I can't handle the "multiple windows with tabbed browsing" thing. I want ONE window/running program, where all my browsing can go on. That is why I'm not using firefox yet. If they made avant FOR firefox, I think that would be the best way to go. You just can't beat the interface.

off topic: thanks! I've actually been using this screen name for around eight years now... (1996). I had to create an email for my new ISP, and I had just watched that episode. :) And the siezuring sig is kind of neat to stare at for a while... I need to start messing around with sine waves and such for randomness.

you do know that you can turn off the tabs, right?

dropkick
June 16th, 2004, 08:34 PM
Is anyone else having problems with window.open() with 0.9? Whenever I click a link, instead of opening whatever.asp in a new window, it tries to open www.whatever.asp (http://www.whatever.asp)

nevermind...I think this was a problem with the single window extension

@disco-stu -- if you install the tabbrowser prefs for firefox(once they get it working with 0.9) you can set it to single window mode
TBP works with 0.9...just need to use the workaround

radioxromance
June 17th, 2004, 01:16 AM
hmm by single window... what does that mean, like it shows all the windows at once? Cause my tabs are all in the one instance of FF running, so I didn't understand. ?

radio - single window extension (http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=290)

I like tabbrowser extensions (http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=111) the most, but I haven't been able to get it to work with 0.9. I have tabbrowser prefs (http://www.extensionsmirror.nl/index.php?showtopic=112) now and it works pretty well

oh thanks, thats actually something I want as it is, I'm simply right clicking and hitting new tab... thanks I'm getting that :)

:edit: when I tried to install it, it doesn't work? I don't know how extensions work. I went to the page and it had like a link saying tab extension.xpi or something, clicked it, it opened the extension manager, I hit install, and it went away and all it says is DOM manager or something...
