Heyas. I searched on google for this and I was directed to a site which showed how to make a rocket flame with particles. I followed the tutorials but it came to a bit where it asked to open the Video Post window. I did so, and then I was required to do this:

In the RENDERING menu choose VIDEO POST. Click ADD SCENE EVENT. Under VIEW choose PERSPECTIVE. (Optional: Check MOTION BLUR) and hit OK.

Now you will add the glow effect. To do this, click the ADD IMAGE FILTER EVENT button. Pick Animated Glow from the drop down list. Click on SETTINGS and set the MATERIAL EFFECTS CHANNEL to 1, under COLOR check the user button and change the color to yellow. Then set the Min. Size to 24 and the Max to 26

Now I'm using the demo version of 3d Max 6 and I couldn't find animated glow in the dropdown box I could see, there were only options like Lens flare Glow and Pseudo Alpha. Is this option only available in the full version or am I missing something?

I'm trying to create a flame to come out of a car exhaust but this was the closest thing I could find. Tutorial is here. (http://www.3dcafe.com/asp/tutorials/max/rocketengine/rocketengine.asp)

Ummmmm...... I don't know what SSS is ??????

I think it was a standard atmosphere effect..... I tried to use a particle system because I wanted it to snake behind the rocket as it turned, but I could never get it to look any good and particles kills the render time.

Only problem with the atmosphere effects is they are added post render, so if your rocket fly's behind a planet, the flames will be rendered over the top of the planet.. doh !

It shouldn't render non visible parts. Although it is added post render, it should only render the effect over the top of any visible portions.

Max's combustion is animatable. You can make the particle stream use gizmo's which have animated combustion effects. . If you want some decent fire, however, check into a plugin call Phoenix. It kicks butt over anything the default effects have to offer. There are a couple more expensive options... but I don't remember them off the top of my head.

You can animate the atmosphere effects too, although I never got it to look as nice as I wanted... (I never figured out the timeline to be honest)
I would have liked to try Phoenix or Afterburn..... I forget which one was used on "Armageddon".....
