I checked the windows task manager (XP), and this svchost.exe is taking up 99% of the cpu usage. I scanned it with norton (2002), found nothing. What could it be?

Thanks

Mtsoul, check your computer for spyware because a lot of programs and scripts run behind svchost so it boosts your memory usage. I read a article on K2 and i used ad-aware and it shouldnt be running at 13,000 kb. More like 2mb only.

I had this problem on my old computer, i would just end process svchost.exe (I don't know what it is, but after I ended it's process, i sure didn't miss it)

it depends on what services are being ran in that svchost.exe - if you terminate the wrong one it will cause your computer to reboot - check for spyware as was mentioned -

any questions on how to do that?
read up on this:

i have svchost.exe too. I read the article and it said that it runs when your at threat to a virus or if you have a virus. I just recovered from the sasser worm, the download.trojan, and the start.trojan. Could this cause scvhost or do i have another virus on my system? Or does this even mean that i do have a virus?

im running adaware now.

EDIT: my cpu usage is from 3-5%... but i do have avchost.exe running.

yeh that stupid sassar worm, i got effected twice because my norton didnt ask me to update quick enough. RPC go d/c and my compyter restarted. In a case like this, should get pacthes if they are needed, regulary use windows update and keep your virus defn's up to date. Run ad-aware tucker and im sure it will find something with svchost.exe. I currently have 5 of them running but none of them are using my cpu and which of course, it helps your os to work properly and also manage network connections. If svchost.exe is around the 2 digit zone such as 10mb, theres spyware running behind it. *kill it!*

I'm on Windows 2k, I have 4 copies of it running, but total usage is at 24%, not bad.

Under all of the svchost.exe CPU column, it's 0. Odd?

svchost.exe runs a whole bunch of network services that need to run. ie, DHCP, DNS, IPSec, etc... So, just because they are there does not mean you have a virus. =)

Cheers!

I had a spybot once but didn't think to check there. Now I will, thanks.
Mine is at about 2900 for network and 17k for System. no CPU usage though.
