that render is not bad....Maya has the worst interface, I am evaluating 6 now. For the simple fact you did this much I have to take my hat off to you......maya is a very strange program.

Yea v5. My school is working on 6 I believe, i can grab a copy for educational purposes. But, I was working on this until like 5 am... i think i deleted it... LOL. Took me like 19 minutes. GRass effect... fire effect and just a big ocean. lol

April 27th, 2004, 10:14 AM
um.. it's ok.. but the grass effect, fire effect and ocean shader do everything for you.. the fact that it only took you 19 minutes pretty much sums it up.. so.. hmm.. what did you actually do other than just place it down in a scene?

But just because your better then me cowboy doesnt mean you have to be sarcastic, LOL

cool, a nice beginner tool to play around with is the extract face tool. Using polys geometry , say something like a square, you can extract it's faces to make extended pieces which eventually you can smooth out. hang on might have a side related link to what i mean.
.soulty
April 27th, 2004, 10:08 PM
a really old thread but here is a little something you can do with the extract face... just expand on that.

what material are you using for the torus? (blinn, phong ect..)
Lost
April 28th, 2004, 04:38 AM
phong e (no idea what it is, i really dont know what the materials do) ...
im posting this weird object i made.. i think itll take 4 minutes to render.. (its rendering now) im just practicing with different tools etc.. it will be up soon..
.soulty
April 28th, 2004, 05:27 AM
as much as i would encourage you to experiment in maya , i dont think everyone wants to see every little 5 minute job you create :P
try aiming for something , i dont mind checking out WIP work. ;)
.soulty
April 28th, 2004, 05:36 AM
as for the material explanation
http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.asp?p=31330&seqNum=3
phongE is a faster rendering version of Phong that yields somewhat softer highlights than Phong. Most artists use regular Phong for objects with intense highlights and Blinn for everything else.PhongE supports the following that Phong does not
Roughness
Highlight size
whiteness
While phong has Cosine Power which PhongE does not.

man.. i was going at it easy enough. Theirs just to much **** to learn, lol...
I read and did the whole thing of Maya Tutorial, that isnt even what im looking for. Their are so many menus commands and crap, its almost overwhelming. I need a good book or something..(I dont have any money though)

I wasn't being sarcastic or rude. Just wondering why, when starting to learn a new 3d program, you bother using the stuff that does it all for you? Why not find some reference images and try modelling something? Anyone can click the torus button and apply a texture. Basically, what .soulty said previously ^^
It's good that you're starting learning - just set your mind to doing something more challenging. That's the best/fastest way to learn.

LOL... oh really?
Lets take driving a car for example..
Your way:
Jump in the car replicate everyone around you and go 85 down the freeway with no experience of what the proper way things are supose to be used (turn singals, lines on the road, signs, etc.). If you dont know what they are, whats the point of jumping into it?
My way:
Read a few manuals, play around with signs, the turn signals, pedals, open the hood, touch things, observe what things do and how they work.
Pop on the freeway and do 180 while everyone else that took your method are stuck going 85 and not knowing the slightest idea what a brake pedal is.
Conclusion:
If you dont know anything about it, best thing to do is get your feet wet before you JUMP in the pool face first (having it not being full of water).
Ponder..

Sometimes you have to chose a method in between - following tuts all your life won't help creating anything new - but of course you need the basics... As for maya I totally agree you need some good training before doing anything good, but take apps such as C4D for example - it is much easier to learn and thus you can jump in straight away... and then if you do have problems, look at some tuts...
.soulty
April 28th, 2004, 08:16 AM
again it seems like you think asphalt is attacking you, im sure he is not. take criticism as a positive, dont try to throw it back into someones face.
its sometimes good to jump in, basically do what you can , and if you are stuck, then find tutorials or tips and hint to accomplish the result for a larger scale project. Just playing around with a program sometimes is not enough, to set your self a task and accomplish it you can learn through-out a project like that and on the way learn techniques/methods that are valuable in future projects. ;)

So, you're that using the pre-made functions in maya (and not learning the basics of modeling), is not jumping in at the deep-end which you claim you have no knowledge of? Weird. I said learn the basics before you start doing things like grass and fire effects. They are not the basics. Box modeling, making basic objects by manipumlating the primitives you're given etcetc. Those are the basics.

Lost, I think soulty and asphalt are right:). But this egg thing u made it looks good.:) I am also learning 3d(for the thrid time...lol) I modelled a spaceship reading the tutorial in 3ds max. I did something my own too than do it as they said. But basic stuff I did reading the tutorial. The result wasn't great, but cannot be termed bad is what I got reviews from the ppl here(most are really good at 3dmax & maya)
Here it is...So i think, its ok to listent to what souly and asphalt said...nothing to loose lost:)

i think im the type thats really into shading... and making it look REAL... i know I can acheive this effect after i modle the object.. but right now im interested in making the simplest thing look almost "real".
i dont mind the comments, only if i get to fight back :)
Ill begin to model something, maybe now... :)

To set up reference images:
1) Make sure all your reference images are the same size/scale and saved as .tif
2) Go to the panel you want to have the image reference on, and click View | Image Plane | Import Image...
3) A selection box should come up and allow you to select an image to use. If you want to change the image, go to View | Image Plane | Image Plane Attributes. The Attribute Editor for the Image Plane should open up and you can select a new image by clicking the little folder button.
Hope that works. Any problems, let me know.
