I have a problem with my CD-RW drive. You see,
it's "locked," it was locked before I up-graded to XP and
now I don't know how to un-lock it. I read somewhere that
you had to un-lock it before up-grading, but I didn't
know that till I had up-graded already. Is there a way to
un-lock it in XP?
Can anyone help me?

I've never heard of a CD-RW drive 'locked up' in windows (unless of course it was Microsoft's fault).
I have heard of problems with ASPI drivers in Windows XP with some drives.
Go to Adaptec's website and look for their ASPI drivers there. I believe they are up to 4.61 or something like that.

When I view the drive's properties, under the settings tab it says: "Device: Locked."
Under the Microsoft Help it said that the drive was locked before I up-graded to XP and that the only way to unlock it was to do it before up-grading. How the hell am I supposed to do that?
Anyway... thanks for the reply. I'll check out the Adaptec web site and e-mail Microsoft see if they'll even hear me out.

Is the drive physically locked like you can't eject or only software?

It's software, I can play other CD's... no problem. It's just when I try to burn something where the problem comes up.

Uninstall Adaptec software, use Nero.

Delete the drive from device manager, shut down the PC and unplug the drive. Boot up windows, then shut down again. Plug the drive back in and boot up, windiws should detect the drive and it should be unlocked. =)

Thank you Niann. I did what you said and once I had re-installed the drivers it was working. The thing is that I don't know if all it needed was to re-inst. the drivers, or if it was the un-plugging that solved it. But anyway... thank you all for the replies.
