i have to work on these images with pine needles. they have a off white background that is not a flat color. i need to make these background black. since they are pine needles, by hand is really not an opion, i've tired a ton of things, anyone have any ideas?

did you try the magic wand tool with like a tolerance of 35? Also try the extraction tool. I have a plugin called "knockout" that is great for this. If buying a plugin is an option I would get this one.

pine needles...ouch! I mean that you have to edit such an image.
That's gonna be painful. :huh:
You may want to try what DDD suggests with the magic wand
tool, and also zoom in to 300% or so and erase with a 5-13px
feathered brush to get the artifacts left behind. It may be more
worth your time to just do this in the first place. Just be sure to
have the image on it's own layer, and not the BG layer before you
begin at all. =)
