contacts aren't such a good idea if you're doing contact sports, they can shatter in your pupil which is much worse. When you play football, you should wear your glasses or goggles. Contacts are never a good idea when you're about to get kicked in the face either.
they are helpful otherwise

i wear contacts. as long as they're soft lenses, you shouldn't feel a thing. if possible, those disposable ones are good.
2 main things about contacts i enjoy - 360 degrees or clear vision, and sharper vision (i think it's because of the distance between your eye and the lense) compared to specs.
i havent really been hit in the face while wearing contacts and had it shatter my pupil, but what happened to me was during a wushu (chinese martial arts) training i got hit in the eye and the lense came out, that's about it.
what i dont like about lenses - your eye dries easily (especially when the wind blows), but normally it's ok. also, it's risky to sleep because it'd really suck if they dried up while you're asleep and you can't open your eyes. a couple of hours are ok, but even then my eyes are dry when i wake.
oh...and there's the added hassle of washing it, which shouldn't take more than 5-10 minutes, and putting them on/off, an additional 1 minute to the 3 seconds for spectacles.

I'd reccomend not getting them for the reasons that thor said. Also there is the highly increased risk of eye infections. Which significantly increases again if you leave them in for long periods of time. The infections, if not treated properly could lead to you losing your vision.
(I hear stories like this every day... My dad is an eye doctor, and he makes it well known how much he hates contacts. I have heard so many gruesome stories about contacts that it's not even funny. And Lasik, don't even go there ;) lol)

I've had glasses forever, I don't mind them too much. I have a fear almost of putting foreign objects into my eyes, so...staying away from contacts. If you choose the right kind of glasses, like me, Docker, name brand, they can look good on you.

I've been wearing contacts for 5 years, currently i have Focus Night & Day contacts, they are great, I've never had any problems with contacts, eye infections, loss of vision, or negative effects..I also ride bmx park / street..so i'm pretty active and they are still okay, I'd just recommend not wearing them for the full 30 days if you're in a dusty area alot, maybe just 2 or 3 weeks..but over all i love them.

I've had contacts for almost a year, and i love them. Playing sports is a lot more easier, and it's just so much easier once you get in the habit of wearing them. And after you've had them for a while putting them in takes less than 2 minutes easily.

I've been using soft contacts (Acuvue 1 and then Acuvue 2 once they came out) for the past 5 years, and I have no major problems with them at all. I took martial arts (Wado Ryu) for about 5 years and 2 of those were with contacts. Again, no problems.

contacts r teh r0x0rs!@!
nah, really, I find them very comfortable and convenient. I use the same ones as Kirupa i think (2 week disposables) for about 6.5 years and they've been great. A few times my eyes have gone thru dry patches or slight irritation, but if i just don't wear them for a few days it's all good again... it happens when it's hot or really pollen-y, but i would say it's less than once a year for me.
Also, if you wear them for long amounts of time (i.e from early morning, say 6am, til late night, maybe midnight) you'll find they sometimes start getting dry, like hsdan said, but that can be fixed by taking them out or just adding some eyedrops
I play lacrosse which is a pretty physical sport and i've never had problems with them (but once i lost one doing swimming sprints without my goggles!).
oh yeah, i even wear them swimming as long as i have goggles in....
go for it!!

I actually swim and take showers with them and I have no problems ;) If I play computer games for a long time and forget to blink or something, my eyes get dry. Putting the lenses in the saline solution and sticking them back in my eye solves that problem :P

I've been wearing them since Christmas(monthly disposables) and have no problems. I don't know if the folks talking about them shattering have ever touched soft contact lenses, but they are not going to shatter.

Contacts are the way to go. After you get through the first week of learning how to poke yourself in the eye (it really doesn't hurt!) it'll be smooth sailing. I've been using soft contacts for about 5 years now with no problems. I would still keep a pair of glasses too though...they're really nice to have when you first wake up/getting ready to go to bed or if you run out of contacts or something.

I play football and wrestling....I also wear contacts...I wear the soft ones that you throw away every 2 weeks...I havent had any problems with them and sports, except for wrestling. My left contact got poked out twice, but other than that, i love them!

I lost one contact once while travelling and for about 4 or 5 hours until the store got my prescription, I had partially antialiased vision in one eye. Made me feel like a nice non-pixel font published in Flash.
Since then, I make sure to carry at least two spare contacts (both my eyes have the same power/prescription) so that I don't ever have those problems again.

i only carry spares when i'm travelling (i.e overnight or more)...
and yeah, keep your glasses for when you first wake up, or if your eyes are irritated for some reason.
Kirupa: I find that just dropping the saline straight into my eyes is ok, i don't take the contacts out and rinse them (but whatever works for you)
and like everyone said, you CAN shower and swim in them, but if you do lap swimming especially sprints you'll want goggles.

I've been wearing soft contacts for 10 years now and I wouldn't be without them. :)
I've done dancing, karate, swimming, just about everything wearing them, and the only trouble I've had is when you get a tiny speck of grit in your eye. But then, that hurts anyway, regardless of lenses. :) Oh, and taking the bleeders out when my nails get too long. :P
The weirdest thing was (because I'm short sighted) being able to see myself in a mirror from a distance without the glasses. That was sooo strange.

I've worn contacts for a long time, the only problem I have is working on computers, I feel more comfortable with my specs on, but I think thats more of a personal prefrence.
Kitiara "being able to see myself in a mirror from a distance without the glasses"
I've had glasses all my life (since, like 4 or 5 years old) so when I was able to look at myself in the mirror without specs.. d@mn strange. also the first time I shaved with my contacts in, so much easier! :D

I've been using acuvue for about 6 years and I haven't had any problems. I can take a shower and go to sauna, and i even used to wear them for a week without taking them off. And still no problems. So I highly recommend contacts to everybody.

When I was in school once, I rubbed my eyes and managed to make one lens fall out (God alone knows how).
Because I couldn't see well enough with just the one to find the dropped one, I had to enlist all the other members of the class to locate it for me... :P
