Hi guys,
i've a weird problem and i think it's very easy.
my PC work (compaq) was crashed from 2 weeks... windows XP.
it's ok now but i can't install the network adapter till now i don't know why? althought XP must regonize it without any problem.
i searched a lot in internet but i couldn't find anything :asleep: .
can anyone help me... my freinfs told me maybe i've a problem in the network adapter... but it's built in.... i've another PC and this is the name of it's network adapter:
intel(R) PRO/100 VM Network Connection
i think it's the same name for mine :beam: .
thanx

Have you considered just getting a new network card? Some cards have been known to poop out and simply shut down the computer without the user's appreciation.
If you do get a new one, get a namebrand one.

Ah.... perhaps the NIC fried? Not sure...
Check Device Manager:
Right Click "My Computer" -> "Properties" -> "Hardware" -> "Device Manager"
And see if it's showing up either in "Other Devices", or if it's got a splat. If its not there at all, and it's an On-Board card, then i think its hosed.
If its there, remove it, and then reboot....
It should be picked up by windows when it comes back up... if not... um.... then.... call your OEM.
Good Luck! :beam:

Compaqs are not notoriously know for their reliability....

does the NIC card have lights blinking or on in the back?
right click it the "Ethernet Controller"
choose uninstall
do the same with the USB controller
then reboot
have you tried that? i think seifer tim suggested it first.

What modem do you have? Do you have DSL or Cable, and if you have DSL, who's your ISP?

? No... what are you hooking the NIC to? Not the Dial-up modem...if you have DSL, and use the 2-wire Modem, you can't have both the USB and the Enet hooked up to the same computer....

NIC: Network Interface Card
AKA: Ethernet Adapter, Network Adapter
You're going through a network? Through a router, or how do you have it set up?

Hmm........ ok.... the only thing I can think of, would be to have windows clean out all the network settings that its built into its system:
Go to Start -> Run -> Type "netsh dump" -> [Enter] -> Wait for it to finish, then go back, and type: "netsh interface ip reset log.txt" -> [Enter]
Then reboot the computer. Reboot into safe mode (Repeatedly hit [F5] before you get the WinXP Splash screen)
Go back into Device manager, check for any splatted devices (either with an ! or ? or X on it), and remove them. All.
Reboot into normal mode, and see if it finds anything new...

Um... now, it should be able to install the drivers, but if it can't then chances are you don't have the right drivers, and need to find the drivers that work on that device.
XP is really good with drivers, but there are some devices even it doesn't know what they are...

Go here... http://www-306.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-4YTNJB
Download the 7mb(ish) driver file and extract the files in a folder. Go into device manager and right-click on ethernet controller choose properties, then choose update driver. Choose search, and then choose the option to specify a location. Point it to the folder containing the files you just unpacked, and windows should now see the connection properly and let you configure it.
Windows never detects built in intel NICs for some reason.
This should fix you right up. (Yes I know you said you have a compaq and I am sending you to an ibm site, but its the same built in network adapter on the mother boards)
Cheers!
