View Full Version : 64 meg Graphic Cards

Another :hat: question:
How and what exactly can the difference be between two graphic cards which both have 64mb?
I mean, I always thought the quality of the graphic card was expressed trough the amount of RAM.
For instance:
- GeForce2 Pro = 32mb
< GeForceFX = 64mb
< ... = 128mb
However, there seem to be different 64mb cards as well...What is the difference between those then?
And more specifically:
the nVidia GeForceFX Go 5350 64mb DDR RAM AGP 8x (now that's a mouthfull)... is this a good card? Or is a 128 mb-one still a lot better?
Coz they seem to praise this card in some advertisements over here, with terms like "Superior Graphic Possibilities" and other...
Any opinions on this card?

never heard of it.. but since the standard gfx cards nowadays are either 128mb or 256, unless you're really cheap, i'd leave anything with 64 in the title (with the exception of processors) well alone.

I just finished searching for it on the internet, and to my amazement, I hardly found anything as well...not even on the official nVidia site :h:

The place where I was planning to buy this laptop is like some kind of supermarket. Now, I don't know if this happens in other parts of the world (at least in the parts where this supermarket chain exists), but every week, they have special offers. Stuff like power drills, brooms, garden lighting, whatever, you name it. Occasionally, they have computer stuff as well. One week they have scanners, a week or three later, they have printers or monitors, and after that, the actual Desktop Computers (or all at the same time).
All this stuff is really cheap, and it is always composed from different parts from different manufacturers, eg. an Intel Processor, a Samsung HD, an HP CD Writer, etc...
Maybe it's because of that it's cheap, but all the parts are top of the bill and very good at the moment they sell the pc.
Now some of you may argument that the quality of these pc's might not be as good as the ones you buy in specialised computer stores. Well, maybe you're right, maybe you're wrong, but my sister bought one at that supermarket over two years ago, and hasn't had any major problems with it.
And now, they are selling laptops with the specifications I gave you in my first post.
So I was wondering if I would buy it or not.
And I have decided not to :D
Main reason: the graphics card inside the laptop is only 64mb. And since I won't actually really need the laptop untill Octobre, I'm hoping another one will be on sale between now and then, say August or something, which will hopefully be better and have a graphics card of 128mb (like the normal Desktop Computers they're also selling). If not, then I'll have waited for squat, but hey, I'm willing to take the risk.
So in conclusion: I'm not buying the laptop, I'm going to hold on and hope I can do an even better deal later this year.
I was starting to regret letting this offer pass by, so I did a search for this card and it hardly exists...
128 is the standard indeed nowadays, at least for desktop computers... Do you think it will become the standard for laptops as well? (as far as it's not already with the real brands like Dell and Alienware and such...)

Ok, basically, the difference between 2 cards with 64 MB of memory is the infrastructure. How quick does everything else perform, etc. Usually on pro cards, they infrastructure is quicker than the other cards in the series.

64 and 128 is going dead (well not entirely but are still good as 128 is not really a need....) go for 256 if you got the money but in three - 5 years time, i expect it to go to 768mb with windows loghorn coming out and p5 5.0 ghz. If you want good speed at the moment, the 128mb ati raedon 9800 xt pro is excetionally good :)

There isn't any "XT Pro", and all the XTs are 256mb cards :sure:

The amount of memory alone doesn't say everything. The speed of the GPU (gfx chipset) is more important, but of course memory is not unimportant either. If you have a GeForce 2 MX400 with 64MB, and a Gefore 4 Ti 4600 with 64 MB, which one do you think will perform best ? ;)

soz got mixed up with the 9800 pro and xt (-:
el, if you are getting one or soemthing, you only need 64 really. My friend runs warcraft 3 on geforce 4 mx440 and it runs great., no lag or crap like that. As voetz said, the gfx is also important. I also have a 64mb but made by intel which does not run smoothly on high level gaming just as lan games (unreal, war3 etc....)

STOP RECOMMENDING 64MB CARDS
sheesh. 128 is still perfectly acceptable: with a decent enough PC supporting it, you will happily be able to play Doom 3 and HL2. Get a 256mb if you can afford it, but don't stress too much.
For the love of god do not waste money on a 64mb graphics card. PLEASE.

LOL :}
Don't worry, I won't, you made yourself perfectly clear :P
The problem is (like I said before), the place where I'm going to buy the laptop composes them (this part, that part), so I'm not able to say: "Hey, I can afford a better gfx card, put in another one". So I'll just hang on untill they have a laptop deal with a 128mb gfx card in it, and then I'll buy it.
You're right, I would get really frustrated if I just bought a brand new computer and was still unable to run HL2 :bad:
Thanks for all the comments guys :cowboy:

Well, the problem is, practically everything else on my current computer sucks... Only 128mb RAM, 1 gigaherz, 40 GB Harddisk...
But I'm going to buy a better (laptop) later this year, which will probably have a better gfx card as well... So there's not really any need for me to buy a gfx card on it's own...
Thanks for the offer though :thumb:

If I remember right, the GO cards are apart of their mobile computing solutions.
