hi, i've decided to make a digital sketchbook here on kirupa, just to post some sketches every now and then.

i'll try at least one each day, but i am quite busy sometimes. i'll try my best though.

xxviii ugly monsters are allways good in my book too...my sketch book that is. yeah i love drawing, but i have been rather busy these days. but i'm gonna make a comitment to drawing at least one butt ugly creature everyday. i might throw in a cartoonfox sketch here and there too. thanks :)

There's an episode of the X Files (can't remember the title or series or anything sadly) where there's a mutated liver phluke living in some sewers and taking chunks out of people. It's not an episode to watch while you're eating spaghetti, I discovered. :sure: But it had this whole mouth deformity thing going on and rubbery skin type stuff, and that's what the picture reminded me of. :beam:

asphaltcowboy , i use a pencil. dunno what one. i just grab anything. without looking. i use the pencil to draw the general shape and form. and then i grab an ink pen, usually 0.4 and go over. adding the details.

nice work again. you should make copies of your pencil sketches before you start inking. also: what sort of paper do you use - you don't seem to be getting any bleeding, which is always a bonus.

i sometimes make sopies of the pencil sketch first. but i like the added pressure that if i muck up, it'll be ruined and i wont have a copy. it makes me not make a mistake :D

i'm not sure what paper it is. i just picked up a cheap sketchbook from some ceap shop. lol, i'm so not a pro at this :D anyway, it could be like 100 g/m2. but i'm not sure.

sorry, another samey head. but hopefully, as i practice with this sketchbook, i'll get better and be able to do better posses and full bodies. its just the thought of having to texture a full creature filling an A4 sketchbook scares me :D maybe one day...

hi thanks. yeah its all messed up, i had to rush a bit cos i had to go soon, and the main details are hard to see 'cos of the over the top texture in the skin.

i told you i didnt like it. sometimes i hae good days, and sometimes i have bad days. today was a bad day. not terrible, just bad. just you wait till i get a terrible day, oh boy, sometimes i manage to draw some reall crappy stuff :D
hopefully tommorrow i will make a good one, as its friday, and i have no plans...yet ;)

hypnotoad, i'm afraid todays creature isnt a hypno-toad. i prefer to just let my mind run free and see what i can come up with. so the toad will have to come when my mind feels like it. sorry, i have no control of my mind ;) :)

so todays is a full bodied creature, instead of just a head, so thats a big jump for me. :D i'm just taking ages to ink it. it takes an hour to texture a head, so this will take a while :D though i'm about half way through the inking.

I always though SH was far scarier than Resi... Mostly because of the beasties in it. I mean zombies got boring after a while, whereas SH just kept chucking up more gruesome things... :)

I mostly use MSN, which is why I'm never on AIM... But even then I don't use it very much. Like... Right now I'm colouring in the huge picture, and I can't be bothered trying to do that at the same time as holding loads of conversations. :) I'm on there occasionally though, if I'm just loafing around at home... :)

yeah even though i never played silent hill (no playstation 'un all) it does seem way more scaryer than resi evil. because of what you said, the 'beasties'. and all the freeky crazy things. mental thing people and creatures scare ALOT more than zombies. though that li'l bugger in the cupboard that pops out just as you pass, or the one that smashes out the window, or the doges that (in the remake for gamecube) dont jump out the windows in the corridir on the first, second, third or fourth time, but just when you think capcom took the feature out, you happily and innicontley skip down the corridoor, and the SMASHH!!!!!! 3 dogs pounce from out of the window onto your **** arm!!...umm,,, what was i gonna say?..

oh yeah, resi is still scary 'cos of the shocks and suprises, but for some reason mental gruesome human experiment-gone-very-very-bad people are way more scary :D dont know why though.


on aim i only ever have one converstaion. and its useually just someone from the forums asking for some help or sayiing they like my site. :) which is nice.

I'd love to give this a colour in PS, but I'd need the lines on a separate layer with no background, if you see what I mean...? So I can colour behind them. I guess I could see how well the Magic Eraser thingy works taking out the white space... *ponders*

hmmm, try this.
you can just open it in ps, so it becomes the canvas, and then copy and paste it into another layer. then lock this new layer and make a new layer, put it underneath,,, like this :

new line art ||| locked
layer 3 ||| un-locked
canvas ||| locked

so layer 3 is the layer with all the colour, and you can have infinate layers as long as they're under the new line art layer. just make sure the new line art layer is set as multyply. :)

Actually I'm a little curious about the whole life drawing thing. What do you do in those classes? I mean, I've never taken an art class in my life apart from what passed for Art in school - "here, draw this bowl of fruit. Again."

well i would recommend life drawing to anyone begginer or pro. it helps so much. though i must warn you, its life models, not bowls of fruit. at least in my life drawing class. :P

i have been going for about 3 weeks now, so thats 6 lessons, and at the start i couldnt draw people at all. now, i still cant just from memory, but my drawings in the class are noticably better. especially faces, i can draw faces quite good now, i just wish my scanner could scan pencil right, as most of my life drawings are very light and 'delicate',,, complete contrast from my creature pics.

also, even though i dont draw creatures in this class, my creature sketches are much better now too (check out the stuff in my portfolio on my site to compare...i reckon i have improved anyway :P) so no matter what style you have, life drawing can help you.


so kitiara, i say, go to lifedrawing, and let your mind expand :P)

I could never get over the bowl of fruit thing. It was either that or trainers, at least at my school. We were never allowed to draw anything interesting or even remotely creative. It was always just draw this thing infront of you. I wanted to draw dragons and cartoons and weird stuff, but no, have a trainer instead...

It's a wonder that school didn't put me off art for life. :)

I've got a question for ya: Love the monsters and stuff, great work, really nice texture and everything, but I was curious if you were able (or wanted) to draw a monster that was a little less textured? Something frightning, and scary, and creepy, but more cell-shading friendly... such as one would find in the monsters found in the SuperNES era of Final Fantasy games, or something of the sort.

I was just curious to see if it was something you would do or not, simply because your monster drawings are awesome, but I think if you toned it down a little bit, they would have great potential for game or cartoon art, which could land you a sweet job working on one or the other. Not at all saying you should stop doing them the way you've been doing them, they ROCK, but if you can adapt your style, then I think you have lots of potential for different jobs.... :beam:

hey, i've just had a better idea! because i want to practice being able to create something from a clients ideas. why not i ask anyone who wants to, to give me a description, or brief, of what they want to see done, and i'll see what i can do. it'll get better as i progress.
so give me a specific descrition of what you want, plus the style (for now, just realistic (like you've seen) or cartoon (think FF for the snes)
i will only (for now) do creatures. no humans.

so, for example, dont say, i want a "hypnotoad" creature. :D (looks at hypno-toad :P)(just joking :D)
rather, be more specific. like, i want a small, lightweight creature, with just 3 eyes, 2 arms and 2 legs, like a human, and i want it in the style of realistic.
etc....

obviosly i cant start today, unless someone gives me a description like right now, as i need a day in advance at least. but if anyone thinks this is a good idea, i'll go along with it. at least i'll try.
and if i get loads of ideas, i'll write them all down, and try to do as many as i can througout,,,, even if its like a few weeks late.


... if no one likes the idea, i'll just continue my normal skethcbook.

yeah just imagine your making a game or movie or something, and want a concept for your animators etc to work with. so i wont be making loads of studys of the creature, just one concept.

Lets say we want to have a large, bulky, muscular animal, with 6 legs, and a large, horned head... roughly shaped like a cross between a hippo and a rhino, very (nearly nonexistant) short neck, built like a truck. Large, fanged mouth. Mostly smooth hide, somewhat like a bull, but with thick hair on its back, head, tail, and some other places.

I dunno, just makig stuff up as I go along... ;)

Ok, you cheeky get :P . I'd like a quadropedal amphibian type creature with some kind of weird eye effect going on (let artist's licence reign supreme). And preferably a cartoon-style one as opposed to your frankly disturbingly realistic pencil drawings. But if you're in pencil drawing mode, that's cool too.

i've been real busy sorting out my hotel booking, flights and the workshop itself. but now the course has been paid for, and the hotel. so now i only have to book my flights, which shouldnt be hard.

so, ff:cc comes out today, i'm getting it after school. so two things could happen:...
1: you'll start seeing ff:cc inspired art work.

2: you wont see any art work for a long time (i'll be playing ff:cc to much :D)

but i will start this thread up again. even if its just for me to stop getting lazy again. (although it was gettting real hard to think of something new everyday :D)

man, its been a loooong time since i've been here, i was here yesterday looking for a job to get me some quick cash, im going to san francisco in january, so i need to get as much cash as i can ^-^
