View Full Version : Photoshop and Flash

Hello everyone!
I am in the process of creating a website using Flash and Photoshop. I am wondering if there is a more effective way for me to keep a decent resolution for my images that I import from Photoshop to Flash. I have been sizing my images down in Photoshop to 72dpi, and then using the "Save for Web..." command, and then importing them into Flash. However, by the time I get it into Flash I've lost most of the clarity and sharpness of the image. I look on the web all the time and I see images that look like they're at 200dpi even though they're not. Is there a way to keep my images looking like they're at 200dpi, while keeping my file size down? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!!!

seems like you have a compression issue,
check out this thread see if this helps.
http://www.kirupaforum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20840&perpage=10&highlight=jpg%20sucks&pagenumber=1
Also.. you can try to run a search on image compression in the forums.

Hey kelly , sorry missed out on that resolution question you were asking.
72 dpi is pretty much screen resolution for most all monitors these days, so your images dont need to be larger in Resolution than 72dpi. To get the clarity you mentioned are more to do with the compression you give your images in flash and what you do with your images in flash.
:: like mentioned in the link i provided, you should save your file from photoshop in a lossless compression , PNG is a good format, then let flash compress the file, where you manually set the compression settings. I usually use a 70 - 80 % jpeg compression in flash for photo/gradient images.

Do I need to change any of the settings in Photoshop when I am saving as a PNG, or do I just leave it as the default?

depending on what photoshop you are using, you should be able to select either PNG8 or PNG24. Use PNG24.
tick transparency if you want to keep transparent areas transparent in flash and thats about it.

FAM-
you can also right click the item in the library, go to properties, and make sure that "smoothing" is disabled, and make sure it is using the default document quality settings.
that should help out as well.
you can set the image compression levels when you export the flash movie as a final product.

Also if you have Fireworks I would drag it through there and export out as a png32 (only available in FW). Much better compression and better image quality

You could also save it as a jpeg, with compression somewhere from 8 to 10. Then import it into flash.

This is the message:
Hello, I read your message on the Flashkit website and I have a question for you that I figured you might be able to help me with. I am fairly new to Flash and I am wondering how to set up my Flash movie so that it shows up a certain way in Internet explorer. I checked out your website and it is similar to the way that I want mine to look. The real effect that I am going for is like the one on www.seanjohn.com. What I mean by that is I am trying to set my movie up so that on the main browser page when you go to my site, there are no scrolling toolbars on the side, and the image that I have created fills up the whole screen. I know that the way you change the movie size in Flash is by going to Modify>Movie... on the main toolbar, but I don't know what to set my movie size to so that it looks like the one on the www.seanjohn.com screen. Can you help me? I would greatly appreciate it.
Kelly B.
I have never posted on Flashkit, yet your email to me, which is wrong on so many levels, mentions my message there...
Not a good way to introduce yourself... you've obviously visited other forums, so don't claim to be such a newbie...
search for your answers, then ask if you can't find them. While searching, read the posts, and learn how everyone else finds their answers, and forum etiquite.
Sorry to 'come down' on you publically, but I know for a fact that at least 2 other mods here got your email...

no, you apologized for posting in more than one forum, not sending mass spam emails requesting help, when you hadn't even posted a single post on kirupaforums...
don't be such a smartass... unless you don't want help.
You screwed up. You have to show that you won't do this again. You are 25! You should know how to interact socially. You have to take ownership of your own actions.

I'm not upset, believe me.
You sent out the spam emails, not me.
Yet, you still haven't apologized for lying, and sending out that spam.
Suck it up, admit what you did was wrong (you knew better, or you've lived under a rock for the last 25 years).
and don't assume to bless me with any kind of God whatsoever, let alone yours. How rude!

So why not admit what you did was wrong, apologize for it, and move on?
it is up to you.
or this will follow you throughout your time here... and not just by me (how many emails did you send out anyway?)

you have not apologized for spamming... a major no-no anywhere...

Not that my input means much, but I think you should just give her a warning and if it happens again show her the results.
Your going to stress yourself out to much on the forum Rev.
