for video editting and effects, is After Effects better? or Combustion? I would be working with 3dsm mostly..so combusion might be more compatible.. Which one is more powerful? easy to learn?

well id say combustion if your going to be using 3dsm because it has some very neat features that take advantage of 3dsm renders, i think you can d teh same with both appts although i hear combustion is more pro, i just wish i could learn to actually use the blasted program :(

AE is easy to use, Adobe interface... similar to most adobe apps. "similar".
Both applications can handle 3d, i know that AE can handle maya pretty well, and Combustion can handle 3dmax pretty well (it can handle more 3d types, but there are work arounds, and 3dmax is sorta in the discreet application line).
Combustion is difficult to start with , especially if you havent handled any sort of compositing application before, but once you get use to what you need to do in a compositer and start working and learning combustion its such a awesome tool, the 2d particle sprits in the app are just amazing. Again it comes down to the user, i know people that use both apps, and others that rather just use AE and others use combustion on its own, both applications are quite capable to handle most effects on its own.
My advice to you is to test both out, get the trials, both are out.
Adobe After Effects 6.0 Pro (http://www.adobe.com/products/tryadobe/main.jsp#product=13)
Discreet Combustion 3 (http://www.discreet.com/combustion/#)
If you pick the AE way, then i would advice you to get the Pro version since this is where all the 3d extras in the app come into play.
Hope this helps
cheers

Combustion made Catch Me If You Can introduction... which is very awsome, and within the first hour or so you will already be able to see how easy it is to make something like that intro with this powerful software.
