This is crazy.

Right now I'd have to say I'm against it.
It will just make evolution more accessible to people in a slick-streamlined-form of "biological changes."
I want kids to see that word, do research and come up with their own ideas.

Student: so creatures evolve over time?
Teacher: no. they change over time. Now go to the office.

Talk about a giant leap for ignorance. But keep faith people, the fossil record was put there by god to test us. The growing body of scientific evidence at this point from Cosmology to evelutionary theory is getting to the point its really hard to argue with. Granted you could nit-pick over dates here and there, but the general concepts are so solid it amazes me that in this day in age people still insist on creation.

and where is this great fact written? I don't remember seeing anything about this in the Bible...
I don't remember any scientific study, which shows that God put the fossil record on earth to test us...
So, please tell me, oh learned one, where is this fact written?
Does this mean that all archeologists who dig dino bones, etc. are just wasting their time, not learning anything, since it is all a big hoax from God?

what a narrow minded statement!

What would Mr. Darwin think?

amazing isn't it?
A joking God who plays jokes on his creations. Almost comical isn't it?

Mr. Darwin: good question:
He did deny most of his findings just before he died...thought they were misconstrued.
Not to turn this into another creation / evolution thread...there's an exhausted/ dog-tired one in Ordered already.
What impact do you think this would have on the school system and how ideas are introduced?
Free Speech and all.

"If you're teaching the concept without the word, what's the point?" said Rep. Bobby Franklin, a Republican. "It's stupid. It's like teaching gravity without using the word gravity."
That is a good quote :) I think this isn't a great idea also!

I like this guy!
Now, I don't have anything -much- against Faith, or Religion... what I don't like is people who can't seem to think for themselves... I don't want to offend anyone, this is not my intention, but consider this:
Here's this book, which, if you beleive in the whole God thing, is, in fact, the Word of God, written by a half-dozen different people, over a huge length of time. At some point in this book, someone(s) makes a statement which, if taken at face value, basically says that evolution does not, and never has existed, it's a lie. So, everyone who follows this book, and there are a lot of them, believe this statment to be true. So when scientists, and Darwin start coming up with a helluva lot of evidence that Evolution is apparently true. Go progress! But here's the problem: The Book beleivers, unable to see a wider picture, are outraged, and complain, protest, and lots of other things, and then start firing teachers who teach evolution, and now are wanting to ban the word, etc. To me, this is not the correct way to go about things.
I'm going to come clean here, and say that while I am not nessecarily a religious person, I have learned a whole lot about different beliefs, and sort of have my own concept of a "bigger picture"... but what upsets me is the fact that some people cannot bend, and adapt their beleifs when something new is learned. This does not mean that because Evolution has been 'proven', that the Bible is wrong, void, incorrect, etc... let me explain some points that seem logical to me:
How many times has the modern bible been re-written, edited, translated before arriving at it's incarnation? I sure don't know, but isn't it possible that someone along the line mis-read, mis-interpretted, or mis-translated something? I think the bible brings up Unicorns at some point, which is not refering to a horse-like mammal with a large horn, but rather Oxen, it was just mis-translated.
Perhaps one of the people who added/edited/translated the book made a similar mistake, or (hopefully not) wanted to add their own little piece of information...
It's a possibilty.
Lets say that didn't happen, that the entire thing is 100% authentic... then we still have another possibilty, which could explain this conflicting piece of information, and this is one I see as more likely, or a more favorable explanation: Metaphor.
Again, I'm going by memory, but I think there is a section that talks about each day that God added something to the world....
Day 1 was the heavens, Day 2 was the earth, etc, etc...
But what if each Day, is not really a day, as in 24 hours of our time? We know time is relative, so who would know how long a day would be to a Deity? one of God's Days could be 24 million years long, or something. An old friend of mine brought this point up several years ago, and it seems to make a lot of sense, since the order of creations is dead on to the order that things appeared in our universe - Heavens, Earth, Animals, People - and I know i'm missing some steps inbetween... plus, there were some large gaps of time between the arrivals, Human Beings have only been on this planet for a small margin of time compared to how long the earth has existed, and animals roamed the planet without us for millions, and millions of years. I think the whole thing is open to interpretation, I make it my motto not to believe anything I read at face value - I always think about the information I've been given, and compare it with the things I already know to arrive at my own ideas and opinions.
Anyway, I think I've ranted for long enough, I'll let you all get back to your regularly scheduled posting... ;) Just want to leave with a last message: THINK PEOPLE! Thank you. :D

"Social conservatives who prefer religious creation to be taught instead of evolution criticized the proposal as well."
then why change it the only person it is affecting is this witch that wants to Chang the world one word at a time trying to justify her job.

Hey SeiferTim, I think you've made some interesting points. I never did buy into the seven days and it never occured to me to question the actual time period of a day as it was written in the bible. I like to think that I'm an open minded person but when it comes to religion I know that I am not. I just don't believe in a 'higher being.'
As for the nut proposing to omit the word 'evolution' from text books I think she should focus her energy on more important issues. What is to be gained from omitting a word?

Some people like to read a Dictionary with a Heavy Black Marker. I hate the fact that everyone is so woried about offending someone else, that no one can even use normal, everyday words anymore.

well said...
and for how long will the church deny the theory of evolution that scientists have proved? I've heard Darwin's theory wasn't taught in some schools, whereas I know in europ it's and important part of the biology school program....
I mean, it took the church ages to admit the eart was round, how much will it take them to admit that man hasn't changed *since god left them on the earth*...

I am an evolutionist myself, but be careful with the word "proved." Science doesn't "prove" anything, it just shows that it is highly unlikely there is another answer. The great thing that seperates science from religion is its lack of faith and willingness to accept other possible explanations for a given situation.
