it all depends. Right now in school we are making a game show all in flash. It involves a squirl, so for the squirl's walking cycle, its all in the MC. but for where he moves, thats main timeline.
I personally use the main timeline as little as possible so it doesnt get cluttered, but you have to with animation sometimes.

ive been told before that the timeline is a place to place all the objects and not a place to animate them.
wouldnt that mean a whole lot of timing? (setInterval)

It depends on the application of the animation.
I suppose for the most part I use them both.
I often use the main timeline and load MC's too.
Tough call man.

I have this insane motion I need to make and I'm not sure to use very well timed intervals or the main timeline.

I use them both, for intros iuse the timeline and for effects/transitions I use movieclips on a single frame in its own scene, then I can GotoAndStop(2); GotoAndStop(3); GotoAndStop(4); etc.
Look in my fla you fool!

It depends. I usally use movie clips AND the main timeline. I think you need to. But like I said, it all depends on what you're doing/trying to do.

I try to use MC's as much as possible. I think that most of them time I use them to much, and end up having MC's in MC's in MC's.

I think for websites you would usually need a small bit of animation on the main timeline, but mostly mc's.
A cartoon or something would be mostly main timeline and a little bit of mc's, plus scenes would become useful.
something in between would be, well, in between...
don't you just need to measure out the correct number of frames to time it right?
