The photo gallery layout "Slideshow" is not working for me despite doing Restore and Repair as per MS instuctions, and also doing individual file extractions, again as per MS Instuctions.
I purchased "FP2002 A Beginners Guide " by Kirupa in the hope I would find the solution, but no success yet.
It allows me to select the pics I need and all that, but when I click ok it gets stuck on the Progress Dialog box with the "Generating thumbnails for photo gallery" bit.
Does anyone have any idea how to correct this very annoying problem.
I use Win2000 with P111 450mhz and 256sdram and Office XP Pro with Front Page
Thanks to all that may take the time to reply.

Hey Bahrin,
I just tried the feature using four 800KB jpegs, and the slideshow format worked well. Are your other Thumbnail options working well? Do you have the latest Office XP Service Pack 1 installed? You can get SP1 from office.microsoft.com/Down...fault.aspx (http://office.microsoft.com/Downloads/default.aspx)

I believe your system is more than sufficient to create the slideshow gallery. Have you ever just left the comp while it seems to be 'stuck' for about 5 minutes? Sometimes, waiting a few minutes (even with the box frozen, greyed out, etc.), the computer 'unfreezes' itself and continues its operation as normal.

Hi Kirupa,
Thanks for your advice. Downloading SP1 didn't fix the problem. The other 3 photo gallery options work fine, but Slideshow still gets stuck on creating thumbnails bit.
I've completely uninstalled Office XP Pro and reinstalled it,and also installed SP1 again, but to no avail.
I have a friend who has FP2002 as a stand alone program and I will see what happens with installing that as a trial to a different directory. If that works ok I will get FP2002 as a stand alone program.
If all else fails,I guess I will have to make do with using one of the other layouts, but I really like the idea of slideshow.
My congratulations on the book BG to FP2002. It is written in a style that even I can follow and covers just about everything I need to get started. Well done.

Hey bahrin,
I'm glad you liked my book. I really appreciate the comments. I do hope you are able to get your issue resolved. You might try the steps outlined in the following URL: search.support.microsoft....s|27854614 (http://search.support.microsoft.com/search/viewDoc.aspx?docID=KC.Q286758&url=kb;en-us;Q286758&dialogID=142633624&iterationID=1&sessionID=anonymous|27854614) (it might help?)

Hey pookie!
You can create a photo gallery by going to Insert | Web Component. The Insert Web Component dialog box appears. Select the Photo Gallery option on the left and select the "Slideshow Layout" icon on the right (it should be the third graphic). You can add images, etc. and add your own custom text.

Hi Kirupa,
Firstly, many thanks for your time in trying to help me resolve my problem. I have managed to get the Slide Show feature to work by an installation of Windows XP Pro. I didn't buy XP just for this, but was considering an OS upgrade anyway and after reinstalling Office XP Pro, Front Page 2002 is fully operational.
All tips & info from MSoft didn't help and I dont know why it should be ok now, but I'll accept in and thank the computer gods for my end result.
I only wanted to create a "Photo Gallery" of some sort to show pics of my kids ,house ,pets etc etc for our folks overseas to view online. Now all I have to do is learn how to add/remove pics once its published on the web,and I know there is a section that includes this in your book.
Thanks again and no doubt I will be back when next I run into a problem with FP2002
Regards,
bahrin

I too am getting the Progress Dialog msg: "Generating thumbnails for photo gallery," running Frontpage 2003 - both on my XP Pro laptop and my Win2K desktop. The first 17 thumbs worked OK, but now it just stays stuck in the dialog. I'm not aware of any limits on the number of thumbs allowed, and I even had the problem on the laptop with only 4 thumbs in the gallery. I'm fully up-to-date with the Windows SP's. Any helpful hints will be most welcome! B)
Thanks in advance!

I am having the same problem, on 2 PCs, a desktop and an IBM laptop. How did bahrin get it to work? He installed Win XP Pro, I guess. I already have Win XP Pro.

I create a new normal page and then click on insert, web component, photo gallery. The horizontal, montage and vertical options all work correctly. It is only the slide show option that is a problem.

I select slide show and click Finish. In the properties box, I click on add, then pictures from files which brings up the file open box. I navigate to the folder that contains the photos, select them and click open. The file names (jpg format) appear in the add box. This is where the problem occurs - the progress dialog box appears that says "Generating thumbnails for photo gallery" the progress bar goes all the way to the right and simply hangs there.

I've waited several minutes and it never completes. The progress box cancel button does not work. I can only end it by clicking on the red X in the upper right corner.

In Googling this problem, I have found only a handful of people with it on various forums or tech-help web sites. None of these people were ever given a solution. It is not in the MS knowledge base.

I am running FP 2002 SP3, Win XP Pro Version 2002 with SP2 with all current MS Office and Win XP updates on both PCs.

I think the problem is installation sensitive, that is, a conflict with some other software. I am playing around with removing items from the Windows startup group and rebooting to see if it matters - results pending.

We would appreciate any help on this. THANKS!

I just finished some testing on my laptop. Through MSConfig, I disabled loading everything in Startup and rebooted. Same problem with trying to create a slide show.

I then rebooted into Safe Mode and tried the Slide Show. Same problem.

I also did a Detect and Repair of FP with no change in the problem.

Guess it isn't a conflict with other programs.

Hey Guys. I have been using FP since its inception. My guess: You are all using dial-up. AND you are probably starting with large pictures. I bet you have 4 Megapixel cameras.

Whay I would do is:

1. Optimize the pictures for the web. They should be no larger than 800 X 600, and be no more than say 100 DPI. Most screens have a 72 DPI resolution.
2. Upload the pictures to your server first.
3. Then use the Gallery applet
4. To add, remove pictures, reoppen the page and double-click on the gallery. This will allow you to modify the gallery.

Second opinion is that the slideshow is not a good feature. It loads a java-type applet on the client's browser and results can be unexpected.

Again, big fan of Front Page, but a program cannot be everything. I would check out arles: http://www.digitaldutch.com/arles/

I first used their product becuase it did batch thumb-nails, just point to a directory, set the defaults on the thumbs, like 100 X 100, or a percentage, and it will hook it all up. It can then generate html pages in a gallery format. Instead of opening up the actual image file when clicked, this opens up another html page with the file in it...

Anyhow, I am not endorsing anything here. If you ahve any questions, drop me a line: email@fredstark.com

I am attempting to do this locally on my PCs hard drive. I'm not even to the point of trying to publish it to the web (no internet connection). I have tried from 2 to 10 jpg files from my hard drive, 288X192 and 72 DPI, each one less than 20KB.
