So.. if you had your choice of video cards, which one would you get and why?
I'm looking to upgrade.. by the time I'm ready money wont be too much of an option. I want a card that will Play Prince of Persia, and the Sands of Time. I also would like to know that I will not need to upgrade it again for a couple of years.
opinions?

Radeon 9800 pro 265 because it's the best. Ever.

the ATi Radeon 9800 XT is the absolute fastest. I'm getting one in about 4 days :)

T-O, the 256 memory in it is actually weaker than the 128 model :)
it has absolutely no advantage over 128, just wanted to share that =)
although David, if you want something good and affordable, just go with a Radeon 9600 card, they're not awfully costy, and they're brilliant cards.. of course, it all depends on what you want the card for :sure:
new games, like HL2 and DoomIII, go with radeon 9800XT, regular gaming (all that exists now), radeon 9600 will do fine :)
still, if you don't want to upgrade again in a few years (which we all will anyway :P), take the 9800XT card :)
that'll mop the floor with Prince of Persia - SOT. And laugh at you afterwards :P
just remember gfx acc. isn't alfa and omega, good CPU power is handy too ;)
(for that, I recommend a Pentium 4 processor, no less than 2Ghz)

the ati R420 and nvidia NV40 should be released Q1 or Q2 this year. The R420 is supposed to be 2x as fast as the 9800.

eilsoe is right about the 128 vs the 256, the 256 is just much more expensive.
also, the 9800 xt is EXTREMELY expensive, if i were you i'd go with a 9600 or 9800 pro, not as expensive and still perform very well.

the 9600PRO alone is powerful, I have that card... I love it
I guess the 9800XT is more about prestige :P Mind you still, I'd love to have one, I'm not ratting it down ;)

correction: the 256mb ones make no difference NOW with today's games. They might well with tomorrow's.

Yea, I bought a game called 'Prince of Persia 3D' at EB the other day. I'm such a moron. It's not the good POP, it's some old ghetto version that ran on 95/98. On the back, theres an advertisement of 'Panzer General 3D Assult' from 1998, can't believe everyone was still into the new 3D fad.

I think POP 3D is a 3d re-make of the original side scroll prince of persia from way back in the day(a friend of mine had it on his old school mac in 6th grade)

That's what I thought!
Grrrr. The game is so horrible, it's 4 directioned movements but yet 3D-ed. I'm going for a refund.

:P I almost got POP3D. I got SOT instead, and I think it's one of the greatest (revived) games.

9800 XT if you're mommy or daddy is giving you a present, but if you're buying it yourself. Go with the cheap 9600.

ok..I bought one now. I got the AI Radeon 9600 SE. Seems to do the trick. I basicaly decided that I was very likely to have to upgrade anyway so I saved 60 bucks off the pro version. So far I don't have any problem with POP SOT. It looks great. For reference, it's the best 3rd person puzzle solving game I've ever played. Very top notch. The movement that made the origional great, is expanded greatly in the new game.

I don't know if you really care or not, dave, but there's an offer where you purchase a certain ATI card and you get Half-Life 2 for free (through a coupon).
btw, POP SOT is and excellent game.

that was with the 9600 XT and 9800 XT, but I read something about it now only being with the 9800 XT.

Speaking of HL2, I haven't checked, but when's the due date on that?

I do have that coupon, so at least as of this weekend they were still offering it on my card. I Spent two hours yesterday looking for the game disk (I thought it came in the box) before I read that I had to send away for it, and that it wasn't even out yet. lol life is fun as long as you laugh at these things. :)

btw, if you go to the web adress specified on the card, you can get about 7 free half-life based games and mods via Steam :)
and you also get immediate DL access to HL2 when it comes out...

Actually I just read this scratch off card. What the deal is, at least wtih this card, with purchasing I am eligible to receive a copy of HL2. It doesnt' say that I get one, mearly that I am entered into a contest for it.
Don't know if any of you have read those cards carefuly. Do check it out. I'd be interested to know if the higher line cards give the game away, or just a chance at the game.
