I would say. min of 2 mil pixels, 64 mb, 8x zoom is cool (4x digital) and a cool lcd screen. That's what i got.
I upgraded it with 128 mb. so i could make some cool movie's to.

Hi, I use Olympus C5050 with 5 mil pixels and must say I am more than happy. It takes great shots and has a wonderful macro - 3cm - you can capture an ant smiling;) There are for example 256 or 516 MB storage cards so you can have 300dpi A4 pics with no loss in quality - around 100 of them on the 256MB card. I would say it is enough. I am not a photographer but a graphic designer so for my work it works perfectly. A friend of mine also has a Canon EOS 300D - he says it is a great machine - perhaps worth checking out. Hope it helps a bit
cheers:)

Keep in mind, do you need all the features of a traditional SLR camera? Or just the features of a tradition snapshot camera...
Do you want to do panning effects, over exposure effects, do you need the ability to mess with the exposure time, aparture and what not?

Your welcome:), digital cams are great fun, with the C5050 you can also fiddle manually with such stuff as focus, exposure, flash control, shutter speed etc. There is also some panorama mode, you can do video (not the best quality though), sequential shooting (11 pics in 4 secs). The pics can be raw, tiff or jpg. I like the quality, really sharp, natural colours. But the macro thing is my favourite. For more information ask your local dealer:)
have a good fun with this or whatever item you will get!

I'm rooting for the Exilim. That's my next gadget purchase. A few of my friends have it and I got to play with it first-hand. Small profile without sacrificing function.

I wouldn't say you need a 5megapixel camera. Depending on how much you want to spend and what you using it for there is a huge choice.
Here are a few guidelines to follow when looking for digital camera.
ALWAYS get a camera with optical zoom. If you can, get a camera with no digital zoom or with a low digital. digital zoom lowers the quilaty of your images by just a bit.
now you must be confused like hell about all the techical terms about cameras. FOr just normal purposes just get a camera with automatic settings. Manual would be a BONUS!
there are two types of camera. CMOS and CCD. CMOS is not common but will uses less energy which is a good idea if you don't want to carry 10 batteries and a huge battery charger. In my opinion CMOS is very good because it saves alot of energy. CCD gives a bit better quilty but CMOS cameras are improving. CMOS cameras from Canon are very good. My recommandation get a CMOS camera.
How many mixelpixel do you need? The more the better. However, remember that you don't need that much. 2 would be minium. 3 for good small prints. 4 for A4 style prints. anything over 5 you don't need for personal purpose.
MEMORY IS A PAIN. Trust me you will end up paying more money for the memory than the camera. lol. There are lots of memories out there but just remember this. The more space you get for your money the better. size does not matter because all memory cards are small anyway. My fabvorite are the Compact Disk because they have 1gig of space. What i normal do is decide onh what memory card i want to use and then chose the camera. For a 2MP camera you can fit a good 120TOP Quailty images on 64MB card. if your getting a 4-5MB camera a 264MB card or higher is a good idea.
For long trips you will need a charger. There are some ranging from $100 to $5. Any will do. Its a good idea to get a charger you can plug into the car cigeratte lighter.
Now your proably confused but heres a site that will tell you what all those terms mean.
http://www.steves-digicams.com/digi_dictionary.html
Also go to: http://www.dpreview.com/ WHICH WILL TELL YOU TONS ABOUT THE LASTEST CAMERA. Its got reviews and everythhing.
I wish i could tell you everything to know, but then this message would be 100 pages long. lol
Recommendations:
Professional camera:
Canon Eos 300D ($800USD)
Personal:
Canon PowerShot S400 (350USD)
Hope this helps!

Your a beginner and going right to the Olympus C5050... lol. don't blow the bank.
MY suggestion for those kind of cameras would be the Canon eos 300d. Around the same price.
BUT its a CMOS unlike the Olympus C5050 which is a CCD. The Olympus C5050 is take up more power than the canon eos 300d.
The canon eos 300d is lighter, you can change the lens, its got an advanced lens asperical, meaning the lens is flat and will make really really really mad *** images. Gots lots of features!
Heres a pic
IN AMERICA its also called the CANON REBAL

i just bought a sony cybershot recently for not too much, and it's really cool. It came with a battery charger (i think you can buy a 4-battery one separate) and i was able to get a 64 MB memory stick for about 40$.
